As Cornwall’s newest coarse angling club St Columb AC are growingin strength rapidly. They have entered a team in the Real CornwallWinter League, hold regular club matches and have big fishing andsocial/club plans for the future.

Last Saturday saw St Columb play hosts to Team Jinx Exeter, in thefirst round of the Angling Times – Van Den Eynde Clubman Supercup. StColumb are Cornwall’s only representatives in this competition, andhad their work cut out by the strong Exeter side led by Graham Stevens (pictured right).
The Jolly Porter based Team Jinx had practised the water on twooccasions. Graham and his squad were well prepared with a fixed teamplan, which included a secret dark groundbait prepared for the teamby Graham himself.
St Columb were led by their popular captain Roger Cannock. StColumb set the format for the match and chose an eight man team size,total weight win combination, which they believed would give them thebest chance of winning.

Team Jinx’s team plan of using ground bait from the off seemed toproduce the early quality fish with Rob Campbell (pictured left)netting the first fish of quality in the match. Rob fished a pole at8 meters with maggot hook bait. In the first hour it looked as ifJinx were going to walk away with it, with at least half of theiranglers having landed quality fish.
Phil Waters for St Columb had landed a ‘pasty’ carp and smallTench, with the rest of the team struggling with small fish.

What St Columb needed was a boost, and this was soon to happenwhen Top Rod Simon Poynter contacted with a beast. Simon had beenslowly making an impression on the anglers around him with his catchrate on smaller silver fish. He switched his line and had an instanttake. Some 15 minutes later Simon happily slipped his net under afine 13lb 8oz Mirror carp (pictured right).
This fish seemed to spark the team into action with St Columbnoticeably taking control of the match.
The rest of the match was a nail biter; Roger Cannock and GrahamStevens played their captain’s role superbly by constantly puttingfish in the net. The guys in the shallows struggled as expected withDave Davis (peg 16) doing remarkably well to catch 6lb plus of fishin 3 foot of gin clear water. Each side had an angler who did notcatch, and at the final whistle it would be a brave man or a fool whowould call this one.
Quick mathematics showed that Dave Davis needed to weigh over 9lbsfrom peg 16 for St Columb to win, as I explained he fished well for afinal weight of 6lb 8oz.
Exeter Jinx had won the day by 2lb 6oz. Graham Stevens and hissquad were full of praise for their hosts St Columb and of courserelieved that they had just scrapped home.
The day was finished off with an after match Bar-B-Q, with theExeter team vowing to be back for a rematch in the future.
Ironically if St Columb had chosen to score the match by sectionpoints instead of total weight they would have won by 3 points?

What’s next for St Columb? Sandy Anderson tells me that St Columbwill defiantly be entering this competition next year, plus maybe anational? Keep an eye out on this club, I feel they will go far.
