Billy O’Connor fished Fisher’s Green for the first time last week and couldn’t believe his luck when he netted a chub that weighed 5lb 12oz, a fish that beat his previous best by 4oz.

Berkshire angler Billy, who designs websites and is web master of the RMC Angling site, fished the bend above the bailey bridge. He used Danish Blue cheese paste flavoured with garlic and coloured with turmeric. The fish is Billy’s second PB this season. He caught a 10lb 14oz barbel from the river Kennet at Burghfield last November.
The river Lea at Fisher’s Green has been on form for big chub for several weeks now and has got to be amongst the country’s best for 6-pounders.

FISHINGmagic contributor Neil Wayte caught a huge chub of 6lb 7oz, again on Danish Blue cheese paste. Neil, from East Sussex, fished the bait on a size 8 Gardner Talon Tip hook to GR60 line.
Mike Staines from Cheshunt also fished cheese paste on a 4 hook to 6lb line in a swim on the Relief Channel. He was rewarded with a big chub of 6lb 6oz.
Chub to over 7lb have been reported from the Relief Channel over the last three seasons. Two chub over 6lb have been reported over the last week.

As many as four chub over 5lb have been caught in an afternoon session from the Lea, and the good news is that the fish are not being found in isolated pockets but seem to be widespread with anglers catching them from all areas.
