Paul Pitchley’s 20lb 12oz common

Temple Catches

Regular Paul Pitchley was well rewarded when he caught an immaculate common weighing 20lb 12oz at 3.50 Friday afternoon, 4th Feb, and a huge mirror weighing 29lb Saturday morning 5th Feb. Both fish were in superb condition and caught on single 12mm Fusion boilie fished in conjunction with a small PVA bag from peg 10. Paul’s fish were recorded as follows, 29lb mirror, tag No 141379, stocked 7/8/04 at 29lb 1oz, the common was stocked at 20lb 6oz on the 8/11/04 tag No 138470.

Following Paul Pitchley’s success, regular Chris Schifano turned up Monday morning 8th Feb and following the advice of David de Vere opted to also fish the deep water from peg 10. Following a string of blanks, Chris was very surprised as his tutti frutti single boilie was grabbed whilst he was still setting up his rods resulting in a very pretty looking mirror weighing 27lb 12oz being banked. The stocking record of this fish shows that it has tag no 183467 and was stocked on the 20/11/03 weighing 25lb 2oz.

Best pike from Bury Hill

Trevor James was the man who showed everyone the potential of the ‘Hill’ this week, catching a monster 33lb 9oz pike on Friday which is one of the best pike ever caught from the Old Lake and to my knowledge is only surpassed by the 33lb 12oz fish which resides in my hallway which was caught by Charles Barclay back in 1853.

Looking to grab a quick couple of hours on Friday afternoon the 4th February, Trevor arrived around 2pm and made his way down to one of his favourite swims, peg 1 which is at the end of the front bank. Fishing a small float leger rig attached to two size 6 Partridge trebles, Trevor also attached a homemade large feeder packed full of minced Mackerel mush which acted as a ledger whilst also ground baiting the swim.

Choosing to fish a small smelt deadbait Trevor fished both rods out to his left tight to the edge of the jungle and snags. With nothing to show for the first hour, the next half hour or so suddenly saw a feeding frenzy with Trevor catching 5 small pike and zander in quick succession. It was at the end of this flurry that the big fish hit Trevor’s small smelt bait powering off out into the open water prompting Trevor to move to swim 3 for better control.

Following two very strong runs which saw the fish power its way half way to the island, Trevor finally managed to net the heavyweight after 15 minutes which is when he suddenly realised the true size of the fish which was huge.

With the help of two independent anglers who had watched the capture, Phil Baunes and Joe Bidwell from Brighton, West Sussex, Trevor weighed the fish on two sets of scales, which confirmed its weight as 33lb 9oz. Sadly, whilst Trevor tried to contact the office for a picture, it was the one afternoon when no one was around so the fish was returned without photographing. A great catch all the same.

Whilst everyone is delighted about the capture of a new thirty which we at Bury Hill have always believed the lake held, there is a little disappointment surrounding the capture of this tremendous fish in that when the fish was caught, it had a huge plug complete with three big size 1 barbed trebles attached to both its upper and lower jaw, meaning that it could only open its mouth by 2″ or so. Better still, the complete moron who was fishing this weapon had tied 6lb mono directly to the plug with no trace. To be honest, words completely fail me as whilst we do everything possible to impress the importance of our rules, how someone can be so irresponsible to fish a plug of any description, let alone this fully barbed monstrosity tied directly to just 6lb line, is totally beyond me and I dare say every other thinking angler! Needless to say if the angler who owned this weapon would like it back, please let me know and I would be more than happy to insert it where the sun don’t shine!
