In June 2014 Warwickshire and West Mercia Police launched their version of a ‘Boat Watch’ scheme on the River Severn at Upton Marina. Since then a number of other schemes have been started along the River Severn from Worcester to Stourport.
Working in partnership with Malvern Hills District Council, Malvern Police have created a ‘Boat Watch’ scheme to be run alongside Neighbourhood Watch to promote security and safety on the inland waterways. The aim is to offer advice and the latest security devices to reduce the likelihood of users of the inland waterways becoming victims of crime.
The police are keen to expand the service to anglers: whether they are boat owners, or not.
Paul Lambon, of Malvern Police said:
“As a keen angler and boat owner, I am mindful of how vulnerable we can be whilst enjoying our hobbies. The average angler can have thousands of pounds worth of kit and if they also use a boat it can run upwards of £10K. My aim is to raise awareness of crime on our waterways and try and deliver a joined-up approach using as many eyes and ears as possible”.
Joining the scheme is voluntary and free. Every member who signs up will receive a welcome pack including a set of stickers for their boat (or car), an advice leaflet on security measures, a registration form for recording serial numbers and boat/engine details and the option of buying theft deterrent security items and ‘Smart Water’ property marking kits at heavily discounted prices. Also, if they provide a valid email address they will receive regular ‘Crime alert’ emails with stolen boat and engine details, up-to-date security advice and advanced warning of related events.
Dilip Sarkar, Angling Trust National Enforcement Manager, said:
“This is another example of how anglers, who unfortunately and because of the nature of our pastime, are sometimes the victims of rural crime, can contribute to the police’s efforts to deal with unlawful activity related to fishing. The Angling Trust encourage all anglers to sign-up for Boat Watch e-news by emailing Paul Lambon.”
