Haven’t we had enough of accounts of giant pike? Of course we haven’t! In effect this book is an extension of Fred’s ‘The Domesday Book of Mammoth Pike’ (1979) and of Neville Fickling’s recent update of that book.

Add to these Steve Harper’s account of mega pike from Norfolk and you have a veritable feast of reading about never less than inspiring stories.

Of course, as I have said many times, not all these stories ring true, but that is not the real issue: what matters is that Fred has, with typical scholarship, marshalled all the known facts, claims and opinions about a particular capture. He does not normally sit in judgement on a particular capture, but if you read his words very carefully you will see that he is very careful himself in his choice of words. In some of the older works such as ‘Domesday…’ some of the fish have been shown to be not quite what they seem, but this is one of the functions of such a book: it allows you to compare and contrast pictures.

For my part I’m fairly happy with most fish until we reach a weight of 60 lbs. There is only one picture of a 60 lb plus fish in this book – at least, one which shows the fish fully – and that is Arno Wilhelm’s 67
