Dave Thomas, a 45 year old match angler from Haslington, Crewe, fished Boundary Water Park yesterday to take a superb catch of bream estimated at about 70lb. He had 20 bream averaging 3lb to 31/2 lb in a catch that included two personal bests weighing over 7lb, the best one at 7lb 7oz. He also landed an 11lb carp.
Dave, a manufacturing engineer, and a keen match angler, fished a quivertip rod, 4lb main line, 21/2 lb hooklength to a 16 hook. End rig was a paternoster with a small, open-end swimfeeder. He used a fishmeal groundbait with trout pellet, pinkies, caster and sweetcorn in the 5ft deep swim at a range of about 30yds.
Dave said, ‘I started fishing at 2pm but didn’t get a fish for an hour and a half. But I knew I was in when the line bites started after an hour. Once they came on the feed I was getting a bite a chuck. They were having a go at any bait I offered them but sweetcorn was favourite.
‘At one stage they were taking on the drop. The conditions, flat calm and sunny, were not ideal for bream fishing; but that didn’t put them off. They were still feeding when I had to pack up at 9pm.’
