YOU CAN BOOK a flight, buy a car or even find true love over the internet. Now at last you can buy a fishing day permit without even leaving the room. Windermere, Ambleside and District AA have introduced e-permits for all their game and coarse ticket waters in South Cumbria. All you have to do is simply log on to www.lakedistrictfishing.net, follow the links and let your credit card do the work. Permits are still available from local garages, tackle shops and tourist information centres – but the new e-permit facility is ideal for anglers wanting to make a dawn start. As well as carrying club information the website has a huge amount of up to date information on fishing and fisheries in Cumbria and is indispensable for any angler on holiday in the area. News and fishing reports are always accurate and relevant. WADAA control nineteen fisheries in the area including stocked trout waters, some excellent coarse lakes and some of the best pike fishing in the north of England on Grasmere and Rydal. Windermere lake, which offers free fishing, is on the doorstep, home to vast shoals of roach and regularly produces 30lb pike. A few of WADAA’s waters are members only but day permits are available for all the top fisheries. Ghyll Head and High Newton are excellent trout fisheries, regularly stocked with rainbows averaging 2lbs and with a good sprinkling of fish up to 8lbs. Years ago the club introduced another inventive scheme by stocking with large tagged fish for catch and release only. Moss Eccles is another lovely scenic fishery near Hawkshead, brown trout only, and regularly produces fish in excess of 3lbs. Ratherheath Tarn and Holehird Tarn are lovely coarse fisheries both with good stocks of carp, bream tench and roach. Pike anglers will find plenty of action at Grasmere and Rydal but the smaller quieter Blelham Tarn is also well worth a visit. Several other quiet, natural fisheries with either trout or mixed fishing offer an escape from the more popular and busier waters. One of the best is Hayeswater, up in the fells at 1400 feet, this rugged fishery holds wild brownies up to 2lbs with only deer and eagles for company. WADAA has an open membership policy and can offer Coarse Membership at £ 35.00 a year and Associate Membership at £ 95.00. Email for further details. |
