The South Yorkshire Navigation Canal at Mexborough was the scene of an act of mindless vandalism back in July this year.
A Christmas tree and other large pieces of wood had been thrown into the sewers with the result that they overflowed and polluted the canal.
Now Yorkshire Water, the Environment Agency and the Kilnhurst and District Angling Club have stepped in and restocked with tens of thousands of mature bream and roach.
“This was mindless vandalism,” said Trevor Birch, operations manager for Yorkshire Water. “Our sewage system in the area is highly robust but there was no way that a Christmas tree would easily move through it.
“We have been working with a number of organisations to ensure that the canal is restocked with fish that would previously have been there.”
This is the initial stages of a project that aims to bring anglers back to the canal.
