The Environment Agency has successfully prosecuted a high profile carp angler at Dartford Magistrates’ Court for fishing illegally in February this year.
Jon McAllister (33) of Cocksett Avenue, Farnborough, Orpington, Kent pleaded guilty by post to being in possession of a rod and line with the intention of fishing without a valid rod licence on February 12th at RMC Angling, Sutton at Hone, Dartford.
The court heard that the well-known angler had been unable to produce a licence when challenged by an Environment Agency Fisheries Officer. Chris Conroy of the Agency’s fisheries team said, “We constantly publicise the need for anglers to ensure that they are properly licensed before they settle down for a day’s fishing.
“Most anglers realise that the funds raised from the licence fee scheme allow the Agency to continue its important work in restoring fisheries, restocking waters and improving the waterside habitat.
“It is so easy to buy a licence there really is no excuse for not having one. You can pick them up from your local Post Office, over the phone or even from the Environment Agency’s website. “It is hard to understand why someone like Mr McAllister should take the risk, it’s just not worth it. Fishing without a rod licence really is a false economy – you will get caught – it’s that simple.”
Mr McAllister was fined £ 60 and ordered to pay £ 55 costs – a rod licence would have cost just £ 21 for a whole year.
