I moved to Spain’s Gran Canaria six years back. I was an avid match angler back in the UK and moving here meant I had a very limited choice of lakes to fish. I started out on Presa de Ninas, catching 100lb bags of carp on the pole for fun, but paid the price with sunburn and heat stroke sitting on my box!
I then started to look for other lakes in my area and eventually I found the magical lake Presa de Chira, a lake holding carp to 40 lbs! My match gear went out the window and I invested in some of the best carp gear around from the UK. I was off up the lake, regularly catching 20 to 30+ lb carp. Years passed with me taking my friends, who had come over on holiday, up to the lake where they were all breaking personal bests and having some great fun.
One friend said I should do this for a living as he goes home smiling every time we fished together. So that’s how it all strated. Now, two years later I have guided clients on holiday from all over Europe with my guiding company Canary Carp Crew. I now have six apartments on the lake for holidays and offer day trips for holidaymakers on the island.
My aim is to get anglers to see there is great fishing in other countries besides France, fishing that can be enjoyed all year round for wild carp in stunning mountain scenery.
