For the first time ever, the event on the New Junction Canal, willbe based on the popular TV ‘Castaway’ theme, taking place over theweekend of Friday 29 June 2001 to Sunday 1 July 2001.
Youngsters aged 11 to 19 from 16 counties throughout England willbe able to camp at the Toll Bar Rugby Club from Friday. On Saturdaythey will take part in a fishing ‘top tips’ training session andenjoy outdoor adventure and initiative tests based on the ‘Castaway’series. The Sunday competition is held at what is now recognised asone of the best coarse fisheries in northern England.
The Environment Agency sponsors the annual event as part of itsUrban Fisheries Programme to promote angling on urban rivers. Thisthird year event will receive £2000 sponsorship, promotionmaterials and evening meals provided by the Agency along with prizesof medals, trophies and angling books for the winners.
The competition organisers, the National Association of Clubs forYoung People, will be working alongside the Environment Agency,Doncaster Angling Association and the Toll Bar Rugby League Club toensure the event continues to be a success.
Their National Activities Development Officer, Peter Bragg saidthey aim to encourage young people to make use of improved facilitieson rivers all over the country and promote caring for theenvironment.
Environment Agency fisheries officer Neil Rich said: “The NewJunction Canal, fed by the River Don, remains a prime venue fornational competitions of all standards.
By supporting this event we hope young people can enjoy learning anew sport while at the same time, learning safe andenvironment-friendly practices.”
