A number of barrels of chemicals were dumped at Trent Lock and Cossall last week and the agency has now identified the substances inside. It says it is a polymer resin, which is often used in wood adhesives, surface coatings and to strengthen paper tissues. One barrel was tipped into the water at Cossall, with another six left on land. A total of 16 were left in land at Trent Lock.
Paul Reeves, environment officer for the agency said: “This type of substance is not seen to be harmful to human health and we have carried out checks in the local areas and watercourses to see if we need to take any further action to remedy environmental effects. We were lucky this time, as the incident was reported quickly and drums made safe, meaning that any danger they posed was minimised”
Fly tippers should be reported to the local authority but waste crime can be reported to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.
