The 8lb 10oz ‘chub’ caught by teenagers Aaron Hill and Michael Press, which most experienced anglers guessed was a grass carp, has been confirmed as such by noted expert and consultant to the British Record Fish Committee, Alwynn Wheeler.
The fish was caught from the river Taff by the Cardiff youngsters and weighed, now dead, at local Gary Evan’s tackle shop.
The fish was then reported in the angling press as a chub in spite of the accompanying photograph apparently showing a grass carp.
The fish was then confirmed as a chub by Piers Langhelt of the National Museum of Wales and consultant to the Welsh Record Fish Committee.
Now, after studying the pharyngeal teeth of the fish, Mr Wheeler said he was now 100% certain it was a grass carp.
