With temperatures just above freezing the Gwinear Cornwall Winter League got under way last weekend at the prolific Gwinear Fisheries, Newquay.
This ever popular 10 team, 8 match series, is fished by arguably some of the best anglers in the far Southwest. Backed by the ever-popular Gwinear Fisheries outfit (Simon and Jo Waterhouse), and run by the ever-colourful Billy Knott this series of matches will be a hard-fought affair. This was borne out in Sunday’s match when there were only 7 points between the 1st and 10th team.
Martin Cocks (Martin Cocks Angling Supplies) was the day’s top rod with 96lb 12oz of mainly carp from peg 36. Martin fished 10-metre pole to the bar, with sweetcorn hookbait.
2nd individual was Retallack Renegades Eddy Stevenson with an impressive 84 lb 10oz, followed by Andy Hines (Tackle Trader Yellow) who secured 3rd with 71 lb.
Top team on the day was Milo Blue with 26 points; Martin Cock’s Angling Supplies snatched 2nd with weight advantage over Tackle Trader Pink with 24 points. Retallack Renegades were fourth with 23, St Ives 5th with 22 points. Bill Knott’s Bookmakers had weight advantage over Milo Oddballs who both finished with 21 points. The final three places going to Threemilestone AC and Tackle Traders Yellow 20 and last but not least Geers ALS with 19 points.
The next match in this league is not until 28th January at the Whiteacres complex. Hopefully it will have warmed up a little by then.
Cornwall’s other Winter League, THE REAL CORNWALL WINTER LEAGUE (so named because all the teams taking part are based in Cornwall, unlike the Gwinear Winter league which has teams from England?) kicks off next Sunday at Porth Reservoir, look out for that report next week.
