Philip Smith caught this fish from a pool near York and says, “Generally in the past I’ve tended to work on the simple rule that says, ‘if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, then pretty much it’s usually a duck.’

Crucian, or ‘Thingy’?
“However not after a recent visit to Pool Bridge Farm at Wheldrake near York.

“Because I’ve just caught a new personal best “Thingy”, which ups my personal best by almost 50%!

“In the past I would have been pleased to call this a crucian carp, but not now. Is it a brown goldfish? A crucian/bream cross? Or another type of hybrid, or the real thing?

“Only Alwyne Wheeler and his team apparently can tell for sure.

“So what do I do now? Well, as all my other ‘crucians’ have come from sites outside the magical three ‘certainties’, I’m going to tell you. I’m going to put it on my records as the same as all the previous ones – a glorious 4lb 11oz, Crucian……. ‘Thingy’.

Note from Graham
Sorry Phil, it’s not a brilliantly clear picture but from what I can see of it I reckon it’s a ‘thingy’, or to be more specific, it looks like a crucian x common hybrid to me. Any other offers? Click the forum link below and tell us what you think.
