Husband and wife Vic and Yvonne Green fished the Fishery Management Services (FMS) syndicate water Bosmere Lake in Needham Market, Suffolk, where Yvonne was to take an astonishing catch of tench. Even more remarkable was the fact that the tench fell to pole tactics.
Vic’s catch included several tench ranging from 5lb to 7lb but this was overshadowed by Yvonne’s haul that included tench of 6lb 8oz (2), 7lb (male), 9lb 6oz and the double that weighed in at 10lb 8oz. And as if that wasn’t all, Yvonne also landed a 14lb pike in the same session. Yvonne’s previous best tench was only about 3lb and she was fishing the lake for only the third time. The big tench is probably the best tench ever to fall to a pole angler.
The winning bait was red maggot to a 16’s hook to a 3lb hooklength. Main line was 6lb to a number eight elastic.
Vic told FISHINGmagic.com. ‘We were cleaning litter up from around the lake and had just two hours left to fish, so we opted for two swims close to the car park, peg numbers one and two. I had a few fish from 5lb to 7lb but had to sit there just amazed as Yvonne made this remarkable catch.
‘What made it worse,’ Vic added, ‘was that I had to weigh the fish for her. You should have seen it as it swam away, it was huge! I’ve never seen anything like it.’
Vic also told FISHINGmagic that two tench over 12lb had been caught from the lake last year by specialist anglers who were targeting them.
