Today, 16 July, the Environment Agency are offering the nextgeneration of anglers the chance to learn about the sport. The eventin Kerry, near Newtown, is part of an on going campaign with localschool pupils to teach them the basics of angling and instruction onfish welfare.

The day will build on a number of successful events organised lastyear throughout the upper Severn area. The course will be the firstin a series of similar events organised by the Agency over the nexttwo months.

This event will be held at the Sawmills Pool where in early 2000the Agency installed a number of fishing platforms to be used by thelocal children. The headmaster of St Michaels primary school, Kerry,will bring pupils from the schools to the pool where they will betaught by a number of experienced in-house fisheries officers led byDavid Carrington.

An Agency Conservation Officer in the Upper Severn area, AlanJones, says: ‘Fishing is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages. TheEnvironment Agency works to actively encourage responsible fishingand events such as these enables the future generation of anglers toboth have fun and learn how to fish properly.

Kerry is situated roughly 4 miles from Newtown on the A489.Sawmills Pool is located on the B4368 approximately three quarters ofa mile from its junction with A489.
