Greenock is probably one of the most popular shore angling marks in Scotland. It’s proximity to Glasgow, comfortable fishing and the numbers of small fish around in the summer months have added to its popularity.

Although the Clyde system is mostly muddy bottomed, Greenock has always been snaggy close in, which is one of the reasons there are so many different species of fish in summer. There were rumours that these snags were ‘objects’ launched over the side by local residents – shopping trolleys, bicycles, prams, cars, whatever – but nobody knew how much of this was true – until now.

I sent down my Go Pro, as you’ll see in the film, and discovered the seabed is carpeted with shopping trolleys. This is no bad thing – the metal meshwork of the trolleys has attracted all kinds of marine life.

It’s still very early in the season, but come the first couple weeks in May, the place will be packed with fish. We did land some small codling, scorpion fish, and a lovely surprise on my last cast. You’ll see that on the video.

This is the first episode in a new series of fishing video blogs I’ll be running here on Fishing Magic – Fishing with Shaun. Watch out for more on the way and you can keep up to date with new episodes as they appear on my YouTube Channel HERE
