An indication of the esteem in which internet fishing websites, and FISHINGmagic in particular, are held by rank and file anglers is the regularity of mails sent to the forum in which anglers ask for recommendations of a specific product prior to handing over their hard-earned cash. The reason for this is obvious, you can read any amount of literature dished out by various tackle manufacturers extolling the virtues of their products but as anglers, what we all want is feed back from OTHER anglers. And via the medium of the internet that is exactly what you get. FISHRITE are fast building a reputation for producing quality clothing and luggage at sensible prices, but at an incredible price of £ 39.99 could it really have all the features I was looking for in a bag ? The answer, in a nutshell, was ‘yes’ – all I required and more besides. My first stipulation was that it was wide enough for me to get inside, complete with boots (or waders). No problem there, at 800mm wide (measured internally zip to zip) for its full length, there is plenty of room to get right in without feeling in the least bit restricted. This I find quite important as I find there is nothing worse than feeling hemmed in whilst awaiting action on the rods. Secondly I was looking for a quick release zip and again I would not be disappointed. I’ve seen so-called ‘rip-zips’ on much more expensive bags and each one appeared as though pulling the top of the bag to exit in a hurry rather than the zip clasp would burst the seams in no time at all due to the force required to release the mechanism. Not the Challenger, the zip just peels apart with the minimum amount of force ensuring that those few seconds of squirming blind panic when the alarm screams and the zipper cannot be found in the dark is a thing of the past. Incredibly what most manufactures also fail to grasp is that anglers require a bag that doesn’t slip when positioned on the bedchair. The Challenger has a neat way of doing this by using a combination of four heavy duty tying points and best of all, an elasticated rear ‘hood’ built into the top of the bag which secures nicely over the back of the bedchair ensuring it remains in position no matter how many times you turn over or (hopefully) leap out of it during the night. Come morning the Challenger bag will be found to be held in exactly the same position as it was affixed the evening before. Although most of my overnight fishing is done through spring and summer the bag does seem incredibly warm and has kept me snug through a couple of recent cold nights without me feeling that a frost would need me to upgrade the bag for a five-season model. Although for the hardened winter fishermen FISHRITE also manufacture an upgraded model which may be more suitable to the mad January carp anglers out there (click on the FISHRITE logo on the right and go to their website for details). Finally the Challenger comes complete with a tidy and easily compressed stuff sack to finish the whole product off nicely.
