The exceptional rainfall over the past several weeks has soaked the ground to such an extent that even moderate rainfall is going straight into the river and raising the level.
Flood warnings are still being applied across parts of England and Wales and the Environment Agency currently has 16 Flood Warnings in place across rivers in Southeast Wales, the Midlands, North East and Southern England
A Severe Flood Warning still remains in force on the River Aire at the flooded town of Gowdall, near Humberside, where two temporary sluices are being constructed on the banks of the River Aire. The sluices will drain water into the River Aire from the last remaining, severely flooded area of the country.
Rain is forecast of between 10mm and 30mm over the next 24 hours in parts of England and Wales. As all catchments are heavily saturated the forecast rain presents a risk of further flooding. Flood Warnings and Flood Watches have been in force over parts of England and Wales for some weeks following the exceptionally heavy rain falls at the end of October and the beginning of this month.
