With the final entries coming in for the multi-species competition set up by Dominic Garnett, there could yet be a twist in a lively year of entries. Among some cracking chub, rudd and other species it was a metre long grass carp caught on an Adams by Fergus Kelly which really ignited the summer.
Predators have come to the fore since September however and the judges have been delighted to see some excellent perch joining the expected pike this year. Venues from small rivers to giant reservoirs seem to be in fine perch form, but the most jaw-dropping capture so far must be a Chew Valley Reservoir fish of 4lb 2oz taken by Matt Roberts.
“It has been another exciting year for the contest and the number of anglers casting flies for coarse species continues to grow,” said organiser and author of Amazon bestseller ‘Flyfishing for Coarse Fish’ Dominic Garnett.
“It’s going to be another very tough call for the judges to pick an outright winner.”
Helping him make that call again will be a panel including Matt Hayes and John Bailey, with results to come early in 2015.
