Slugs for Chub

Ok I will try and leave the shell intact and go from there as I imagine it could get quite messy breaking the shell.

Not really... crack either side with forceps... You will either get it out intact or a bit 'gashed' - which will release a bit of juice.... can only add a bit of punch to the party..

I had no such luck today .

Switched to a piece of hot dog sausage and caught an eel around 1 1/2 lb which was ok .

Will try this technique again however and hope to land that elusive Chub

Has anyone used those smaller buff / pinky slugs?

Water snails were good for perch and trout at one water I fished.

The small black snails that dwell in silkweed, not on the weir standings which are usually uninhabited, but free growing from the river bed at the right time of year can be a killer for roach.

Denzinho.... Stick with it. It will come good. Stealth, observation and experience come into play. Sometimes come away from the river with egg on my face when a fish scoffs at my efforts..... Just be prepared to learn from observation.

1 thing I will ask is how often to move swims? I found myself spending around 30 minutes in each.

Sorry to hi-jack this post Denzinho but where can i read chav profs article ?

i'm similar to you and determined to improve my river chubbing
I also give each swim 20-30 mins starting on the upstream swim first

It is on winter fishing mainly but it still explains a lot on feeding habits etc. Very interesting buddy

Funny thing with Chub - there is not a single best way of catching them. Some Chub just nail slugs..... Just as many are so startled by them you may as well have dropped a brick into your swim.

likewise with surface baits... Some days Chub come up and take stuff off the surface, other days its rare to get a rise.

Most Chub seem to love locusts... but some are more choosey on presentation - others are suicidal.

I find the most consistent stalking bait nearly anything that can be made to sink slowly and enticingly through the water column.

It depends.... I like fast and furious.... I can cover a lot of ground in a morning.... Some features are reliable - But always looking for new ones. Some swims I don't even look or observe the fish... I know they are there and from behind cover just send a bait over the top of the bank side cover and watch the open spool of the reel - if line starts to peel away faster than the current I strike.

I am going to give it another go when I get home this evening for a couple of hours.

Hopefully all this reading all comes together nicely and I get that beautiful Chub I have wanted for a while now.

Just came back after a 2 hour roving session and blanked.

I am starting to wonder if there are any chub in this free fishing area. There is a club which owns a large stretch of around 2-3 miles and a weir protecting there stock right next to this free stretch.

Might be worth a shout.

No,

The water is murky in most places apart from one area which is clear but shallow.

Just where it starts dropping off into deeper water you can see fish taking food items off the surface. I have many times chucked pieces of bread in and seen little tiddlers taking it.

I used a snail in this area but to no avail .

Should I be concentrating my fishing in this area? even though I'm seeing small fish.

You'll see a lot more with Polaroids, IMO an essential bit of kit - also you will spot more as you get used to 'fish spotting' especially if you look in the right places.
