2nd hand pole or new?

To me a pole is a laborious, cumbersome and visually ludicrous way of fishing!

I sort of agree with you, if you are talking about a long pole, however short pole (5-6m) fishing can be great fun. There is no messing about with rollers and all the other stuff that goes with long pole fishing.

I'm now probably gonna weigh up over the next couple of weeks between the Monster roller pulla (new) and the beastmaster, or whether to spend a few more quid and go for the middy nano xr8 10/11.5 package.

Nava, depending on your budget,the Daiwa ZR4 is a brilliant buy,
The Daiwa Matchwinner has replaced the ZR series of poles, but they are still available at a discounted price,
you may notice the 16 metre shimano beastmaster on offer at £499 complete with 7 topkits, I would steer clear of it only because unless you are built
like a tank will you be able to handle it at full length for a long time.
Its a great pole at shorter lengths,but is heavy at around 13 metres +
the daiwa is a lighter pole,easier to manage stiff, and with a decent spares package,
I am not affiliated with daiwa in any way, in fact my last 3 poles have been shimano, I bought the daiwa G50 last year and it is a great pole for the money,

I have a zr4, in fact I have 2 they're a lovely pole in the right hands and possibly the exact opposite of the beastmaster (which I also considered buying recently)

If you're a newby to pole fishing, likely to be a bit heavy handed or cumbersome then the beastmaster is 100% the pole to choose. If you're a bit of a fairy, like myself, and do everything delicately then the Daiwa will be a lovely pole.

The Daiwa is lovely and light and stiff however if you fish commercials for carp then I wouldn't recommend it. I have had some very fragile poles in years gone by and never broke a section however I did break a zr4 number 3 while playing a fish using a 6-8Middy elastic and an 0.8 bottom earlier this year. It was partially my fault as it was a big fish and I had pulled a hell of a lot of elastic through the puller bung however with such a light hooklength I would have expected that to break before the pole.

Both are decent poles for the right person. Incidentally I think Chapman's are doing a 13m package with spare top 5's for the same price as the shimano.

Rob,was it a side puller or a puller bung you were using,?
I have heard of a few number 4 sections breaking on the ZR5
but not any sections going on the ZR4,in fact a friend of mine has
one and has landed double figure carp with it,
I had a try out of the ZR5, able to hold it one handed along my leg
when sat on seatbox,but it didn't seem to give me confidence if I would have
caught anything big,whereas the ZR4 did, the only reason I got the G50 was that I got a decent deal on it,
My previuos pole was the shimano aernos, brilliant pole which gave you
lots of confidence and would handle anything from silvers to carp,
Like you said both poles are good depending on how you handle them

It was a standard puller bung. To be fair I haven't broken any other sections but I have read online that others have broken match kits. I really like the zr4, I bought a 13m package and then a full 16m pack as they were so cheap last xmas. I would expect it to last me a good few years. My last pole was a Maver f41! Not many people can remember them!

I have noticed if someone asks what pole to buy you sometimes
get various models mentioned,
around here a lot of people prefer tricast compared to daiwa,
further south its reversed,
its a pity shimano have no flagship models out, brilliant poles,
but expensive for spares,
if the OP has a budget of say £500 i would look around for a good 2nd hand
pole,and take someone along who may know a bit more about them,
for that price he would possibly be looking at a pole that would have cost
around £900 or so about 3 to 4 years ago, he could possibly pick up a G20

I tend to agree that a used pole is not necessarily the best thing to buy as your first pole. Buying used is better if you already have experience of that particular pole, especially if you're buying it for spares. I'm on the look out for spares for my very old Shimano diaflash because the new top end match pole that I bought recently, has been a disaster in my hands. Multiple sections have snapped already (in the course of normal fishing). I guess this also means that you also need to weigh up what you're buying new because if you're new to pole fishing, you will soon get disillusioned if the damn thing keeps breaking. Therefore go for something that is rugged rather than the latest that is light and stiff.

Nearer 20 I should think! It has 2000 written on the butt section but doesn't say if that refers to when it was made. I've had it at least 15 years and I bought it 3rd hand. Before that I had a Milo 11-11.

I still have a fibre glass 7 metre Garbolino pole in my shed,
unscrew a red plastic base plug to take the sections out,
The milo and maver poles are bringing back memories,
I recall maver doing an N47 I think it was, and the milo was considered
one of the best poles at the time,
I was tempted by the diaflashs on gumtree and ebay but the ones I saw
are collection only, a bit to far away for me,
anyway back to 2nd hand or new, a bit of advice I would give is
to go for the best you can afford, and if going for new,try a few out in
your price range because the dearest is not always the best in terms of
feel,balance, spares,

I managed to pick one of them up. The main pole turned out to be in fantastic condition (looks hardly used compared to mine that I've had from new), with the bonus that it came with multiple top kits including two extra No. 4 sections.

I hope it lasts as long as the one you have now,
a brilliant pole in its day and still is, I think it will get a cult following
like other various items of tackle, BOSS BRILO, ASI seatboxes,
Normark Rods, the early Pete Warren stick floats to name but a few,
