Another good read in AT is a list of funny quotes such as;

"I'll be glad when I've had enough of this" Fred Taylor.

"The best times to fish is when it's rainin andcwhen it ain't" P McManus

" Fishermen are born honest but they get over it" Ed Zern.

" My best fishing memory is about fish that I never caught" George Orwell.

" Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught" Anon

"Fishing is the pursuit of what is elusive but obtainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope"

Can't remember who said that.

“A float, pleasing in appearance, even more pleasing in disappearance.”
From “A Passion for Angling” but original source unknown to me

The most quoted angler ever is Izaak Walton who said inter alia,

"No one can lose what he never had" and " angling may be said to be so much like mathematics in that it can never be fully learned"

The classic "I'll be glad when I've had enough of this" is one my first Father-in-law used, a lot when we fished together in inclement weather . . . . I've often muttered it to myself with a smile when fishing on my own remembering him.

It’s like the old adage of being hit over the head with a wooden stick - it’s nice when it stops!

I believe that Fred J's original remark was (when fishing during a blizzard with Walker) I'll be pleased when I'm too old for this ***ing lark - or very similar.....

Not a famous quote but something that's always stuck with me. Me and the BF were fishing one day at a place whose name I cannot for the life of me recall when a bunch of guys turned up who had booked one of the lakes for a match....30 pegs or so.

As they walked off it started to rain and as one they all started singing

" Here we go,here we go,here we go
Through the wind and the rain and the snow
Why we go, why we go,we dont know
But here we go-oh...... here we go "

Another one quoted which I like is by Paul Voicker a US presidential advisor;

«*Work is for people who don’t know how to fish*»

Lefty Kreh, US fly fisherman and a giant in the field of pioneering saltwater fly fishing was eminently quotable.

Those of our number that fly fish will get the first;

“Most fishermen use the double haul to throw their casting mistakes further.”

and

“There is more B.S. in fly fishing than in a Kansas feedlot”

I seem to remember that Lefty was famous at fly fishing shows for perfectly casting with 5 fly rods in each hand.

My all time favourite, I've no idea who originally coined it but I've read it many times and it certainly sums things up as far as I'm concerned...

'A worm on one end and a fool on the other'.

There's a fine line between angling and sitting on the bank looking like a fool............

“Angling or float fishing I can only compare to a stick and a string, with a worm at one end and a fool at the other.”
