superb way to fish.nowt like donning a pair of waders and trotting for grayling on a river.unlike some of my mates who stick to stillwaters because they know they can't catch double figure fish like they can on lakes and ponds:rolleyes:

🤣🤣 I agree pal. I love all types of fishing but theres nothing more special than running a float down a river at first light while the most is still lifting off the surface

I do enjoy your blog reads but I have to question, in this instance, how any 'complete guide' to trotting can omit the centrepin reel in the tackle section?

Sorry... One of those points of order things and i'll get over it.

Otherwise good work as always and keep it up (y)

Hi pal. Sorry about that mate. I've just done it based around my own personal fishing. Personally I don't use a centrepin with a standard stick float. I use my centrepin when trotting slightly heavier Avon/chubber floats on rivers with a bit more pace.

Hey no worries mate and thanks for not taking that the wrong way, i've been nibbling me fingers all day after reading it this morning and it finally got the better of me.

Anyway, you a Nottingham fella n'all...

Get on those embankment steps with your sticks and a 'pin and see what your missing ;)

Mind you that said you'd probably still revert to a closed face, if my memory serves me right many of the Trent greats of yesteryear such as Barlow & Dean, to mention just a couple, used closed face reels when it was an all out Roach 'n Chub river and they didn't do too bad, I too was smitten with my Abu 501 back in the day.

It was like angling royalty on a daily basis when John Dean had his tackle shop in Mansfield and we, as schoolkids, would trek across town during our lunch hour to see what was in on an almost daily basis and if i'm honest I can't ever recall seeing a 'pin but the maggots were always top notch :)

That's something I'm going to be doing this year hopefully. A lot more trotting. I've had a couple of sessions this year but with doing the blog etc I've tried to do different things so it doesn't get boring. I've been a bit lazy with the pin the last few years tbh and I have to say it usually stays in bad now. That's me being lazy as I do love a bit of trotting with the pin. And no Problem pal. Nice to speak to people who read the blog 🙂

If anyone wants a truly complete guide on fishing a stick float then treat yourself to Jim Baxter's 'Stick Float Wizardry'; if my memory serves me correctly 120,000 words from the top names at the game (plus a short bit by me!).
