You post, "Bob included. If only they could see how stupid they make themselves look and the damage some are doing to the thing they try to promote and project."

This thread is nine pages long, supposedly all about me, and I think I have posted twice.

But as the likes of the Barbel Society Sectretary is so keen to keep on stirring things up let's give him both barrels. Just read the following exchange of emails and decide for yourselves whether this man does the BS any favours whatsoever"

Paul to me on Tuesday morning...

Dear Bob

I have today read the feature in Angling Times about the Trent with regard areas to fish. Upon further investigation I have been informed that you supplied the information. I am very disappointed in you that you appear to have misled the reporter concerned and the whole Angling Times readership. You know full well the pegs you have named and know that no day tickets are available on the first 27 pegs below Hazelford weir. I can only assume this was meant to cause yet more mischief in what appears to be a continued feud against the guys that fish there.

I would have hoped that you would have shown your support of The Barbel Society by recommending the stretch at Sutton, thus giving the society publicity but your anger seems to extend to The Barbel Society as well.

This continued feud is once again causing us more embarrassment and is putting our relationship at risk.

Regards Paul Owens

My response was as follows:

Continued...

Now why does this guy think he's going to elicit a public apology if we whinges and spreads purile rubbish on the various sites he is is currently spouting on?

Paul - go back to your own site and talk about me behind closed curtains or I'll give you the other barrel.

You are nothing but a stirrer who is damaging the very society he professes to defend.

When are you going to recognise that you and I no longer have a relationship? You have made that patently clear through your actions in the past few months. Consequently I no longer regard you as a friend nor will I whilst you continue to behave as though you exist on a pedestal.

I haven?t seen the AT and I haven?t written a feature for them for a considerable while. For the record, and frankly this is none of your business, I received a telephone call following the capture of a 14lb 12oz barbel, ?Not a big one, but a decent fish nevertheless!? said the cub reporter, and was asked to name 5 day ticket venues where one would stand a good chance of catching a Trent barbel. I specifically told the reporter that Fiskerton was a cracking day ticket venue and clearly stated that the upstream 27 pegs were syndicated. If he has published anything to the contrary then those are not my words. Normally I wouldn?t have even mentioned the fact that the top end was syndicated but felt obliged to do so because of the constant back stabbing and snide comments coming from a bunch of parasites who mean less to me than something I might tread in accidentally.

If something other than that is in the paper it is neither my fault nor is it my problem. And really, I couldn?t care less. As for your ?disappointment?, do you really think I give a f?..

You?ve wrongly called me a liar in the past and like a Judas you?ll do it again here because, let?s face it, you want it to be true. Well I?m sorry ?mate?, you?re wrong again.

But seeing as I?m bothering to dignify your puerile outburst with a reply, let?s just reflect on your hope that I would support the Society and promote Sutton through this request for day ticket information. Is Sutton now a day ticket water? Has the Society actually listened to the mutterings of its membership and started issuing day tickets? I honestly didn?t realise. And here?s me thinking that you had to become a member of the Society and then purchase a season ticket. As you can see it can be tricky keeping up with what?s day ticket and what?s not, don?t you agree?

Just think back to the bile that has been posted by you and Messrs Pope, Betteley and Degg, in your roles as officers of the Society, in the past week or so, then throw in those by the likes of Berridge and Bonney, and other Sutton stalwarts. And then think back to pre 1992 when you (according to your article on the web site) first fished the Trent for barbel. Back then I and a handful of others had Sutton to ourselves, even in the Sheffield and District days. The fishing was fabulous. Steve Pope came to me for advice on the stretch and counselled my opinion on whether the Society should take it on. On reflection I should perhaps have said no and kept schtum about the potential, but I didn?t. I encouraged him. I did the first AT feature on the place, too, before the Johnny-cum-lately?s appeared. And you know full well that I was promised a ticket.

Yet another Society promise that hasn?t been delivered. But why should that surprise me? I hear Dr Dolittle is running for president, but I could be wrong.

There will come a time when you must decide whether you wish to be a man of standing within the angling community and begin to behave like one. You must decide whether you are the spokesman for the Hazelford cartel or spokesman for the Barbel Society, because I?m no longer sure what you stand for. Who the hell is ?us?? When that time comes you?ll perhaps reflect on some of the mistakes you?ve made and wish you had taken the time to think things through and maybe not jumped to so many conclusions.

What I can tell you as a ?friend? is that you have failed miserably to deliver the promise I saw in you.

I cant for the life of me understand why you posted that Bob. Especially when Pauls just said sorry for everything a couple of posts ago.

I repeat my opening statement, Has Bob lost the plot?

Dont think anyone needs to say owt else really and Iv just promised to write something interesting, well I will try, about catching lots in winter.

"Especially when Pauls just said sorry for everything a couple of posts ago."

You need to do a check Tony. Paul asked if Bob was prepared to wipe the slate clean and asked Bob to apologise for the Mr Angry stuff.

Now as I have said, I am pretty open minded, but I think you and Paul are the people who have lost the plot in this.

I dont think Bob is bitter, just annoyed that the two of you seem to continually twist facts and statements. Anyone who reads this thread from start to finish would come to that conclusion....

Bully,
Think you must read funny.
Quote,

"Would you like to wipe the slate clean and have a fresh start? I know I would. So I would like to say, " if you have been offended by some of my comments in the past then I would like to apologise here and now".

Now are you man enough to apologise too?

Looks like Paul apologised to me.

Come on guys, enough's enough. You are in danger of filling up the internet and preventing it from being used for it's intended purpose ie the spread of pornography, so let's knock this one into touch shall we?

An argument is a two sided discussion that, if done properly may just cause one side to alter their stance. You guys are so deeply entrenched there is no chance of conciliation therefore to continue is a waste of time and energy.

All that has been achieved so far is to make Tony look obsessed and Bob to look stubborn. Paul has frequently jumped in with both feet, something that he should rise above as Secretary of the BS.

There have been and will be no winners, so everybody, back to your respective corners and take a break!

Dave, got mail from a mutual friend last night who has just looked in for the first time ever.

He said,

"Well, this is what you do of an evening! ....It is grotesquely marvellous;
like watching a reality TV programme in which the contestants are people
who have forgotten that Bernard Venables was all their Dads".

No need to tell you who wrote that ey, says it all dont you think.

Guys

In a bid to draw a line under this unsightly episode, I would like to add that the mistake I made in the article was just that, a mistake. I hold my hands up and apologise to all for

I know nothing of the 'previous' between Bob and the Barbel Society (of which I am also a member).

Bob was both very helpful and polite when I asked him for information about some decent day ticket stretches.

We are printing a correction in next week's paper, and I am just sorry it has caused such controversy.

I'd also like to congratulate the angler on what is clearly a belting fish. This seems to have been overlooked.

Now, let's all go out and catch some fish before the cold weather arrives next week.

all the best

Steve

At last, light at the end of a long, dark tunnel.

The reporter made a mistake, something we all do from time to time.

Can we now let it drop?

And if there are any further calls for apologies from one individual to another, can they ask for them privately?

I wonder if the A.T. might look at this thread and notice how many responses (i.e. how much interest) there was compared to the purely fishing-technique related threads and start a fishing politics section of their own.

Oh please save us dear Lord Graham!

It does seems that no matter what the truth is it will never get in the way of a good disagreement.

Wol, that one hell of a long time since I rang the bell to start the round! Heheh!
