avon rod

I have been fishing again now for two months with a cheap rod but now want to get a better one .I just want to pleasure fish on still water and rivers and am thinking of getting an avon rod .does anyone think this is the right rod to get , if so any ideas as to what one.

Don, if by pleasure fishing you mean float fishing and maybe the odd legering session with lines up to about 4lb then a 12ft match rod would be a reasonable compromise. But if you want to catch bigger fish with lines to maybe 8lb then go for a light carp or Avon type rod. Any of those sold by Leeda, Shakespeare, Masterline, etc, will be fine. Just go to your nearest large tackle shop and see which feels best to you that's within your budget.

Everyone you ask will probably give differnt answers to this one, my own choice for a modern avon type rod is the 12ft 1.25tc jobs from Harrison, Ive used mine for a wide range of situations from trotting for Barbel to long range roach fishing on stillwaters. If you are a messer you can buy the blanks or part built rods with cork or duplon handels.

I've been using the Shakespeare Tetra specialist for a while now and can honestly say it's a superb alround twin tip rod, OK up to 8lb lines. It's only fault being the carbon tip, mine snapped although a replcement was sent within days and the old tip actually with the top inch missing with a new top eye whipped on, actually suits me better anyway for the river fishing I do. I've had some hefty barble and carp with no problems and yet it's still Ok with the smaller fish

I don't know if Paul was referring to the Harrison's Interceptor, but it is indeed a good choice. But I would say that wouldn't I - I designed it, but was just too modest to recommend it!

I've had a Ryobi (Masterline ??) John Wilson Avon Quiver Twin tipped jobbie for a few years now and can say its been great for most stuff Chubby Tenchy etc

I have three of the (old) John Wilson Avon quivers, I guess they may not be in the same league as some of the other rods but they do only cost 50 quid and I think are a great choice for a first all round rod.

i also own two wilson avon quivers.
great value for money.
very versatile.
ive even had mid double figure pike whilst spinning for perch.
i paid &110.00 for the pair from bowlers angling in dagenham essex.

Hate to be a party-pooper, but I personally do not like the JW Avon rod - because of the `sliding winch` reel fittings. a Fuji-type reel fitting is far, far better - no chance of the reel dropping-off at inopportune moments !! For me, the Leeda Specialist would be the one to choose - which I did, 12 months ago. Picked one up, with both tops, for the price of the butt and one top. Cracking little rod - and after that I went out and bought one of the Leeda Duo-Combo Barbel rods. Again, got butt and both tops for the price of butt and one top.

I've had the wilson rod so long that I forgot about the sliding reel seat.
I solved mine by putting a layer of electricians tape on the handle before sliding the real seats into position.
This seems to hold the real tighter to the handle and doesn't let it slip.

Sorry forgot to mention I replaced the reel fitting with a fuji fps16 fitting its the work of 10 mins to whip one one and solve a lot of problems.

I also have 2 wilsons put together with 3000super GTMs excellent.
angling centre derby sell milo avons under their own banner these are ok aswell.

I have to JW Avon too, It is a great rod but the reel fittings are a problem. I find that the reel keeps twisting out of line with the rings. I am thinking about having a 'fuji type' reel seat fitted. Having said that I hace seen this rod advertised for a little over ?50 which represents fabulous value for money in my opinion.

I'd agree with the general thread of advice here, I have had my JW Avon for best part of a decade now. It can literally do everything up to mid double carp(and over on weed free waters!)
Having said that, a friend of mine has recently acquired the 1.10 tc Harrison Interceptor....now that is some baby!
It'a amazing, he's the most untidy, tackle abusive angler I know.....but the protective plastic on the cork hasn't come off yet!
