I’m now up to post 801. If you are interested in lure fishing then this thread is probably more interesting and informative than most books on the subject.

Derek was a true expert and shares his experience freely. There are many intelligent questions from old/ex members of this forum too.

Spot on Ray, Derek was a true old school gentleman angler of the first order,
We only ever met the once at the funeral of Eric Hodson the founder of the National association of Specialist Anglers some five years ago
That said we did correspond by letter and pms on fishing magic on numerous occasions, mostly about our experiences on the same venues in and around Sheffield and beyond to the Trent, Witham and the fen drains when we were younger.
Tbh, and this is a big statement, I think he stood head and shoulders above many of his contempories in the world of lure fishing!!

I think you are right, he obviously knew his stuff but comes over as someone who doesn’t have a huge ego. That’s something that you can’t say about many other anglers. Some intelligent questions too. Also some good contributions from Ron Clay amongst others. I had only a passing interest in lure fishing at the time but even back then it was an interesting thread.

I don’t find that you have to be passionately interested in a certain type of angling to enjoy the thread. Derek mentioned frequently that he liked to sight fish and it’s one of the most exciting forms of angling, whether it’s lure fishing or surface fishing for carp and It’s strange how once you have your eye in you can see fish that others totally miss.

Its true that if you can see the fish it adds another dimension...even chasing tiny Dace and Chub becomes totally absorbing if you can watch them approach and take the bait.
