Come on guys you will have to change the name or at least use the full title all of the time because there is all ready a BCSG and it's been around a tad longer than you.For all you float flingers who don't know BCSG stands for British Carp Study Group.Sorry but as the recently retired Sussex RO for the BCSG I felt I had to say something.
Surely you could call it the BIRMINGHAM Specimen Group.

Now I don't want to start an argument or any ill feeling and I'm sure Sedge will come back with a much more diplomatic answer....

Seeing as the 2 founding members don't come from Birmingham, they can hardly call it that.
They do live in the Black Country, although this is not a criteria for joining.
Where the two groups differ is that you don't need to PROVE with photos that you can catch to be able to join the Black Country Specimen Group.

The name Bham SG has also been used, and dispite Sedges nickname for me i certainly ain't no Brummie!!!!! i for one knew fully that our intials clashed with the carp group but to be honest didn't forsee the popularity the group would find so i didn't see a problem.
Whilst i see it may cause a slight problem the facts are that we are a group of friends who like to target decent fish, who's base is in the Blackcountry, personally i have never put much on a name but i'm sure now it has been raised we will certainly discuss it, can't say we will change the name however after all the Blackcountry has been about for a long long time!

Nothing to discuss !!! To suggest we change the name is ridiculous. There is no attempt at plagiarism in any way shape or form, that's obvious by the different nature of the groups. It's a bit like the BBC chasing up every company that is similiarily represented by the same letters - Birmingham Bulldog Club, British Beetroot Company...how stupid.
The BCSG stays, like it or not....

Carp - quote - "...I'm sure Sedge will come back with a much more diplomatic answer...."

I hope you didn't put a bet on that.

C'mon Sedge, I know it's dear to your heart, but a bit heavy....?

Everyone has missed my attempt at humour in this post.I would never call another angler a float flinger in a derogatory fashion and having friends who live in the Black Country I know how much they hate being called Brummies or people saying that they come from Birmingham. It's unfortunate that your group has the same initials as a long established in fact the longest single species group in this country.

You stick to your guns lads, bloody Carpers think they own the world, most carpers dont catch enough to study them anyway. Paul what the hell sort of name is Yam Yam there's obviously some Black country/Brummie meaning there thats lost on me a mere cockney lad.

I'm sorry Neil, but I just didn't see it as humourous, and still don't. It's OK fooling around with people you know, have met and know how far to go. (A classic example is the banter between Paul Williams and myself). But when you've never met another person how is one supposed to take it, except at face value.
If you intended it to be a joke, then you have to hold your hands up and say 'I was wrong, it back fired'.
But, I still suspect that there is an element of seriousness in your mail judging from your last reply. If that is the case, when you first felt unhappy with our name (and are you speaking personally or is this the thoughts of officialdom within the carp group. As you quote them you need to clarify that), you should have mailed us direct. Using a public forum to address issues like this is not right. The only reason I do so is because I'm doing so in a reactive manner rather than proactive.
I still can't believe that you posted a thread like this. If you took the time to contact the Black Country group you would see that there is no attempt whatsoever to play off any other group. Everything about our set-up indicates clearly who we are.
Maybe you carp specialists should stick to catching oversized goldfish? (I put that in by the way, in comparison to your 'float flingers' comment. That's not my view, just using it to illustrate a point)

I'm not saying I'm wrong because there is a clash in the initials used by both groups which could cause confusion. It was mentioned on a personal level and nothing official from the BCSG.I don't see why I should use a personal email when the post is on a public forum.I expect other BCSG members will come across this in time.At no time was I trying to be Provocative I was just mentioning that there could be some confusion.
Any way shouldn't you be going to work this morning seeing it's the only day you do work.

BCSG ??? what rubbish do the chosen few have the right to the bludi initial now, for God sake, the lunatics tried to criticise me back in the 70s for daring to use the name study in my organisations name, not very British is it haha.

The Black Country Specimen Group sounds good to me mate and its nice to hear we still have enthusiastic spezzi hunters grouping together and carrying on with some old traditions
