Weather changes are poor for fishing, even in cold weather you can catch if its been consistent for a few days, but, with it being 3 or 4°, the changing to 9.5°, and blowing a hooolie, but mostly still and dank, then we have the affects of the rain a week or two ago easing off, then last night torrential rain for hours which will see the rivers off again, what a shitty winter season it's been, my worst for fishing for many, many years, add to this the way it fell venues that I would have fished have been closed, shoots, work parties, flooding and opportunities naffed it all up...

Trouble is at this time of year catches are generally down, so in three trips I've caught five fish, which doesn't bother me apart from the fact the two venues fished are prolific and sitting there in the freezing cold, or wet conditions puts a seventy year old off...

I just can not be bothered any more with fishing in cold wet weather. Time was when nothing would stop me. I don't mind playing a few holes of golf but to sit on the bank getting cold and wet is a nono.

I'm happy, if it's not too wet and cold, to give it a go, and I've had a few good days this winter. But way fewer than I'd hope for. The alternating floods and freeze-ups have put local rivers out of the question and flattened other waters. The scale of the floods has trashed some stretches, remodelled the banks, destroyed the swims and dumped silt and debris on access tracks making them unusable. I used to get my best river fishing in the winter months - fish shoal up, weed's died back etc - but those days seem long gone, especially in the area I now live in. Even when conditions briefly settle, blanks are highly likely.

Well our river levels were good, but we had torrential rain last night and its still raining now steadily, can't imagine that by tomorrow it will be rising fast and my local lakes have been more difficult than usual, so much so that if the rivers do come up I may try the canal, but that is hard for me these days as I like to think I might snare a decent fish or two...

I wish I could find the time to get out rain, cold or otherwise 😭

....On the other hand I guess it makes the times you can go all the more worthwhile & is probably why i am still gagging for it even after all these years.

After the winter if 2023/4 when it rained almost continuously from October to May this winter hasn't been too bad. I found though that the fish haven't been feeding in the cold, dry, high pressure days of bright sunshine. I had some cracking days in December, then they shut up shop. About three or four years ago it was the same. Other than losing a large catfish on my barbel tackle I didn't touch a fish until April.

Strangely enough I'm supposed to be going tomorrow, but my venue of choice, Bedford, the river is almost bursting its banks, not ideal, add to that my next venue of choice could be busy by the time I will be able to arrive, sense dictates I shouldn't go, never did have a lot of that...

I had harboured thoughts of going fishing today after the visit to the GP as I will park next to AD and could pick up some maggots. These were dispelled by “events” and the comment made by Er indoors” who in their right mind wants to sit on a bank on a day like this in the hope of catching a cold wet fish only to put it back” . When you put it like that……..!

Well, I went, had an idea of going to my second choice with the bonus of if it were busy, going on to a small club lake not too far from there, hmmmm, didn't take into consideration road works close to my home completely cutting me off from the M1 because of the traffic avoiding it, so went back to the deep lake and returned the normal blank, I need to catch a few else I will be packing up for the winter in future, it was bloody freezing and super boring....

I was out a couple of days ago. Went to what's normally an ok winter lake with a mate who wanted to try an expensive new pole. Two anglers, 4 hours on a place they know well - couldn't get a bite between us, although we set out to catch anything, no matter how small. . You're in good company!

Do you know, I fished the slider all day, with not one tangle, the float slid perfectly every cast, which as you know normally an odd cast doesn't slide properly for whatever reason, in fact my last three trips slidering have been virtually tangle free and a pleasure, unfortunately the fish didn't think it was worthy of a bite, lol...

It’s forecast to be snow flurries in most places tommorrow so I’ll be staying at home trying to keep warm 🥶

Its forecast to be getting a bit warmer in the middle of next week so I won’t be getting out fishing until the temperature has settled a bit.
