A conversation with a good customer today highlighted just how many good vintage centrepin reels there are on the market.

A Pegley Davies Quality PDQ catalogue from 1963 advertised a surprising selection of pins. The vast majority we have had, or currently, do have in stock.

For less than £100 you can buy your very own piece of angling history to use. I’m not talking of the inexpensive pressed alloy boys’ reels, albeit some are quite good. The higher quality English makes such as J W Young of Redditch have many reels to offer in this price bracket. Rapidex and Trudex are an excellent choice for the smaller species, silver fish, grayling, roach, and chub up to barbel. Windex, Freedex, and Seldex models are suitable for heavier species, the reels being robust and with a good line capacity.

For the larger rivers and drains, the Leeds and Stanton ball-bearing reels are excellent. Having a built-up drum core and larger winding barrel they recover line quickly. This is important in a river of size and pace especially if match or competition fishing.

Grice and Young of Christchurch fair well with their range of Gypsy and Avon Royal Supreme models. Medium and lightweight models with adjustable drags and check clickers suit most fishing events. We have many customers who use these for roach, chub, carp, and pike fishing. Our USA and Canadian steelhead customers say these are ideal. They are strong and lightweight with a shallow drum barrel and varied brake options.

For the more traditional angling appearance, wood and brass Nottingham reels are a great look and choice. However, without brass or alloy drum flanges changing weather conditions, sun to rain can cause issues with the reels warping and binding.

Hardy Conquest

At the top of the market is, of course, Hardy. A good used 4” Conquest could just sneak into the sub £100 category. They not only look good, but with the lightweight drum and front brake tension adjuster, it’s a reel suited to most freshwater scenarios.

Have a look through our listings on our website using the search box on the top right of the home page.

Two good keywords to use are ‘trotting’ and ‘centrepin’. These will bring up a good selection of reels that are in stock and ready to post.
