I always look forward to the latest edition of the excellent Classic Angling magazine being delivered and the latest edition (Number 151!) did not disappoint. I was drawn to an article headed ‘Centrepins on the rise’.
We would agree with this as with both limited editions and other quality centrepins demand is out-stripping supply. Demand for true ‘classics’ such as the Allcocks Aerial maintain a high demand but that has waned a little due to large collections coming onto the market. The article is more about more recently manufactured reels (most based on the Aerial) such as by Mill Tackle (Garry Mills), Paul Witcher, Chris Lythe, Tom Kelsey, Dave Swallow Richard Carter and many more.
Classic Angling cites a recent case of a Paul Witcher reel where the price was quoted at £2199 and would appear to have been sold close to that figure. Once again it’s a case of ‘find me another one’ as few were made and they rarely come to market.
If you order a bespoke reel they can be built to your specification with a plethora of options. Number of spokes, Hole Pattern, Size, Line guard, Left or right-hand wind, colour, handle material and colour, type of check, customised engraving, presentation box etc. However, if you want one for Xmas 2025 you might be too late!
At TT we are fortunate as we are offered high quality reels daily and always have a good range available for all types of fishing. These include less exclusive reels, but still highly desirable and a pleasure to fish with, such as Hardy and Kingpin.
If, like me, you consider trotting or float fishing for species such as tench (or perhaps I should say barbel nowadays) the ultimate of coarse fishing then a centrepin adds to the authenticity of the experience. All part of our heritage especially when paired with a split cane rod (Or one of our high-performance TT Classic Avon or float rods). Click here to see some of our available centre pins!
This style of fishing does not have to be expensive. We have very good centrepins such as the Adcock Stanton or the Hardy Conquest (great value) at far more modest prices.
As always part exchanges are welcome and all reels come with a 12 month TT warranty.
Finally Classic Angling magazine is well worth supporting. Where else can we find news plus educational articles on the Classic side of our passion? Also you can sit by the fireside without having to turn a computer or phone on! For a subscription go to https://classicangling.co.uk/subscriptions-2/ They may even take a cheque.
