Hi all,

I caught this one in the summer one evening on float fished bread. However, when it came to weighing it, it turned out that my younger brother had been looking through my stuff, and didn't put my scales back.

So as, a result, a fish which I thought could've been a potential 3lb + crucian I've downgraded to 2.5lb, which I know it easily surpassed.

However, I've done a lot of reading about crucians and how they'll hybridise a lot with other fish, so I'm wondering whether firstly the one I caught is a genuine Crucian carp at all?

Float fished bread, fished on the bottom. White crumb loose feed, which had a couple of packets of biscuits ground up with a blender mixed in with it.

Sorry Luke,
I think it's a hybrid - it's only got 28-29 scales on the Lateral line (rather than 32-34) and only 6-7 on the diagional between the dorsal fin and lateral line (rather than 7-8).
I have had exactly the same problem myself in catching ones like this - great little fighters but somehow disappointing when you find it's not a TruCru!
Tight Lines!

I'm with Greenie, true crucians can vary considerably with colour, and even shape to some extent depending on the water (the difference between Marsh Farm and Summer pit fish is a good example of the variation between true crues) , but the lateral count is generally the best guide although many 'fakes' will usually reveal themselves to the 'trained eye' prior to the count.

Sorry to rain further on the parade but it looks about 12oz at the most.

The photo doesn't do it justice in terms of size. I should've put an object next to it to show to show the scale of it.

But thanks for the feedback guys.

300 yards from the Wensum!
I dont know all the latest rigs, methods etc...but i do know that is a brown goldfish. True crucians are so rare these days - most waters that claim recent 3Ib crucians are actually brown goldfish when you see the photos.
