Discontinued products......what would you want?

I've got 2 x12ft tech specialist twin tip rods and I've used them for shoalie barbel fishing too as well as legering for bream and tench. I think it's an ace rod for chubbing though, the tips are spot on, or maybe it's just because I've had it for 10years+ and am just used to it. They still sell for a good few quid on ebay. I have an 11ft tech specialist quiver too, much lighter but great for smaller chub from smaller rivers.

What was your beef with that particular rod can I ask and what do you have now?

I don't (or didn't) particularly have "any beef" with it really. I had one since they first came out many many years ago and my old man still has one that he occasionally uses. As previously said the quivers just got on my nerves with the line wrapping around them all the time. I swapped it in mint condition plus £50 for 2 x 12ft Free Spirit Specialists Stepped Up, old style chestnut blanks, 1.75lb tc, both with quiver top sections and quivers.
The Free Spirits just feel more pleasing and balanced to use to me and I've never had a problem with them and can't fault them in any way. A rod is a very personal thing to most anglers and what is right for one person is not right for the next.

I also have a custom made Tony Fordham 1.25 tc, built in 1.5oz quiver tip rod, built on a Sportex blank that I use for lighter chubbing work and that's probably about the best rod I have ever used bar none for that particular style of fishing.

Tackle tarts don't go in for 'discontinued' items, but a recent one to disappear are the Fox solid jerk traces. Lovely they are and I only have two left.

Also the Koma all-in-one suit. I have one and it's still fine, but it's ten years old now and well ...... you know ...... without wishing to spell it out ...... my body has enlarged itself across the middle. So I can still get the suit on ..... hey, not bad ......, but it's a bit of a squeeze and won't allow for extra layers. It was only a Large, and I could do with an XL now. :wh

Found some on Ebay. Lady wanted £8 + £2 postage, but was open to offers. I put a bid in of £6 + £2 postage close to the finish line and she accepted! WhoooohooooO!

At £6 it was over the odds as they were £4.75 if I remember, but I thought it gave her a small profit to cover costs and overall, 4 traces for £8 seemed reasonable. They last a long time so will probably see me out now, or maybe not (hopefully).

I had a go of a friend's Trefor West Century Pulse barbel last night on the Dove...and I almost had a sex wee from the experience.

I will now be on the hunt for the holy grail as far as barbel rods are concerned in my opinion.

I would love to get hold of a Daiwa 11ft whisker Avon rod. I had to sell mine and I really regret doing it
I wish Shimano would also bring back the Technium specialist rod too (never understood why they got rid...was it something to do with Matt Hayes??)

I still have a few left but I found the ET ones to be good Jeff,
I never understood why Fox reduced their selection of lures to just a few models, they had some superb lures and must have had the biggest range this side of the USA!
Does anyone out there know the reason why Fox did this?

The original Big S - what a plug! The cheapo versions from around the mid 90s were never as good.

I recently bought a mint Shimano Twin Power Specimen rod (2.25TC) for £25. These mid 90s carp rods make perfect big river barbel rods with just the right blend of power and action. I think we might have gone down a bit of a blind alley with specimen rods, particularly carp rods.

There are a lot of good, and ridiculously undervalued, rods from the nineties.
I think you are right about carp rods. Fashion has gone increasingly towards out and out casting tools. However, the vast majority of buyers don't use or need the casting potential they have sat on their rod rests.

If I want to replace an item of tackle, I quite like the classic spiral weave carbon fibre of the old Drennan range of rods. Ebay is great......

My Drennan big feeder is great for playing chub and can cope with far bigger - the only problem is the reel bands are a bit naff and require black electrical tape to stop the reel moving......

anyone had a similar problem, or better modification?
