A friend of mine is thinking of selling a pair of his Drennan 1.25 11ft Specialists. The are around 25years old and made in the original IM6 material. The are well used and the reel fittings will probably need replacing. I may be interested but I have absolutely no idea what would constitute a fair offer. Any suggested value would be greatly appreciated.

I used to have a pair of those exact rods, butin imaculate condition, even when I sold them they looked mint. If I remember correctly they had fuji hardloy guides. Regarding the handles, they were way to long and had crappy sliding reel holders. Seriously, i'd give them a miss. If he is your friend he should just give 'em to you, especially if they're well used and in need of new handles!

Hi Tigger you are correct the reel fittings on those rods are cheap and not fit for purpose.
The rods have a lovely action though and wanted to make sure I was not making a derisory offer. I know the 12ft versions fetch decent money particularly if the are in very good condition.

Is it the one with a fine crossweave and a compound taper?
If it is (which I suspect) I think that I still have a 12ft version of the IM6 1.25lb Drennan Specialist rod which is still in good condition.

I caught some nice river Carp up to around 7 to 10lb on mine from the upper Lea back in the day but it’s just been sitting on the wall for years now, not being used. I thought it was quite a good rod, although like Ian I wasn’t that keen on its sliding reel fittings and it’s long handle.
I may give it an outing after some mullet the next time I fish for them.

Keith,
I do remember the ones you have, I think they were all the same blank but obviously your ones have a crossweave finnish.
The ones I had were a plain kind'a blank, I think they were a browny colour. If I remember rightly your rods have fuji hardloy guides also. I've no idea which of the two blanks came first.

The 12ft version was a popular rod back in the day. I seem to recall Alan Wilson using a pair at Wilstone this would have been 1995. HeI really rated them and also used them for barbel fishing on places like the Stour. Agree the handles are too long particularly for river fishing they seemed to be fashionable at that time the Alan Brown avon and barbel carbon rods also had very long handles. Maybe there was a technical reason why handles were long my first carbon float rod has a long handle.
