Something I found -sort of- amusing …

I dont know how many of you will be aware of “Octonauts” - its a kids program aimed at youngsters on Netflix. Basically, it’s a cartoon series about a team that investigates rescues & protects animals and nature. Each episode they focus on a different animal, tell you some fun facts about it & usually rescue it from some calamity or other, you can sort of imagine. The underlying idea being to both entertain and inform kids of the wonders of nature and animals.

Anyway by chance I noticed there was an episode called “Octonauts & the giant Carp”….well I couldn’t pass that that by without having a looksie could I !!!

…So I settled down to what I thought would be a nice episode telling me fun & informative facts about our beloved (cough cough) Carp and watch the Octonauts rescue it from a some unfortunate peril.

Well blow me, turns out the episode basically turned into a lecture on how Carp are an invasive species, responsible for bankside erosion and need to be removed and put back from whence they came ! ….Couldn’t believe it ! ...the producer must be a lurker on FM !

…Carp ! ..those poor buggers just don’t get a break do they !!! :p:)

Yeah, I also don't get the hate given to Carp. I don't catch one very often but when I do it's always the most fun ever have fishing, they are in another league and I think a beautiful fish. The only fish I love to catch more is a large Tench but again I do not catch that many. Give the Carp a break I say!

Carp are the staple of commercial fisheries, copy-cat stocked in countless club waters, turn up in most rivers due to flood escapes, are the mainstay of stillwater match fishing, are at the centre of a thriving specialist scene and the bait and tackle industry that service it ........ Why do carp need "a break"? By any measure, they're thriving. I don't hate them, and I sometimes fish for them, but I've got reservations about peak carp, too. Polarising matters between carp lovers and alleged carp haters goes nowhere.

It's worth remembering that the Octonauts like the Argonauts have a quest but they only do it one month a year whilst the latter only shopped at
Argos, either way they are trying to 'fleece' us of our time, or our kids of theirs, I reckon we watched worse stuff when we were young, come to think of it I bet we watch worse educational fare on mainstream telly nowadays in our maturing years.

As for carp, I fall into the give them a break category, terrific fish, why should be judge them by the commercial template, there's far more to them than that.

Indeed, there are far worse things on tv and don't get me wrong I actually rate the Octonauts. Despite being fictional cartoon characters they keep the content factual & go into quite some depth on the animals they feature ..did you know the siphonophore is actually multiple interconnected creatures each with a specific task rather than 1 single animal and scientific study suggests the pink orb appears to be the leader ?
...no neither did I till I saw it on Octonauts...

However despite the productions valiant efforts to extensively research their subject matter I feel for the "Octonauts and the giant carp" episode they missed a trick.

At no point in the episode did I see reference to the positive industrial impact of Carp & how this magnificent species has single handedly saved a faltering tackle industry or its Danube origins and natural.spread across mainland Europe. Neither did I see any effort to explain how we are just 1 fossil remnant from dispelling the non indigenous label to its presence in the uk or how waters could have been backfilled and lost altogether from our aquatic environment had it not been for the wide reaching love of this fabulous fish & the heroic efforts of Carp anglers to save the day.

Blow me I didnt even see mention to a hair rig, bite alarm or bivvy during the entire episode!!!!!

...can't be right can it....😉😄

I have an old German video where the pink orb is quite strict in leadership but I don't think it's fit for children to watch :ROFLMAO:

I'm not sure any fish or types of fishing get represented accurately on mainstream tv, which goes to show how much us anglers know about our quarry and how it exceeds that of the majority of joe public but quite a way. The most common faux pas is the angler holding the rod and reel in the most bizarre way that seems to happen in all dramas. Also the best and most educational programmes about fish are angling shows which as educational matter can show angling in a good light. Even (unfairly) critisized shows like Monster Carp tell you more about this species than most wildlife shows that lets face it get a bit of a budget induced reluctance when it comes to filming anything in cold water.

Here's the scene for Sky Sports/Matchroom's 2022 Fish 'O' Mania final at Westwood Lakes, Boston.

The Matchroom website tells us this is the FA Cup of match fishing.

You can watch all 4.5 hours on youtube. Commentary is almost exclusively on the excitement (sic) of the developing leader board.

Hard to imagine a more alienating depiction of fishing. I feel sorry for the carp.

Those two pictures say it all. One depicts a natural and beautiful setting in calm solitude and the other hell. I wouldn’t fish the former for all the tench in china.

I would sell my soul to have a chance to choose. It sort of explains my lethargic attitude to getting on the bank.

I must admit that looking at the picture I posted is profoundly depressing , after 3 months of almost no rain. That picture showed the river flowing hard and clean , and looking at its very best . And now ? It's a trickle , the long pools are almost static and there's not enough flow to hear a sound, unlike its boisterous exuberance in late May . Lower down, two sections have dried up and the water temperature has hit 18C - which for an upland stream running through a heavily shaded valley is extraordinary .

I look at parched fields, wild fires and rivers with no water (including the bloody Loire !) and face another day of 30 C heat and blinding sun. I don't want to live with a climate belonging to Southern California , I want to live somewhere mild and damp . Fishing feels like going through the motions - I caught two carp on floaters yesterday but just came home praying for rain.

We've had droughts before but this follows years of dry summers - deeply depressing .
