Following on from Steve's home made bait dropper thread I thought this might interest someone. I make feeders out of plastic BBQ grill mesh, lead flashing, some heavy shock leader and a couple of tie wraps, the tie wraps are optional.
The BBQ grill cost just over a quid, lead sheeting from a scrap yard would be a tenner at most. Or you can buy lead sheet on rolls from Amazon or fleabay. You would get over 20 feeders from one sheet of grill mesh. I reckon they cost less than 20p each.
I cut the lead into strips. Around 10 mm gives me a 35g - 40g weight, 15 mm gives 45g - 50g. I dress the lead in a vice to smooth off rough edges caused during the cutting using tin shears. 11 squares is an ideal length for my feeders, but I make the diameters different for large and small loads. The overlap is 4 to 5 squares. The tie wraps add rigidity which helps when filling them, but are not necessary in the smaller diameters. The loop is made from 60lb shock leader, a quid in the bargain bucket of a tackle shop.
So, guess how many home made feeders are in this box?
6? 8?
13 home made feeders is the right answer, 2 of which are XXL ones for initial pre-baiting and there is room for another 2 or 3. They also avoid getting snagged up as much as rigid metal feeders.
