On boxing day I'm dropping my brother up to Bristoland thought I'd go fishing but the shops won't be open for a licence.

I'm sure there used to be some free stretches of the Avon, can anyone recommend anywhere?

possibly with a canal/pond to fall back on if the river is a no go.

I'll fish for anything that doens't involve pellets and commercial carp holes

cheers

Try this link for some good advice.

I have fished the river at Cobham and it is very good with easy access and parking.

Abbots pool is very secluded and is quite hard to find but is worth a look.

As forST Georges Park this is a city venue and I would go with some company as you never know who is about, but the park always seems busy with mums and kids so I think that there would not be any problems. I dont know how to link into this address but try copy paste in browser.

Good luck

There is a free stretch at Hanham, drive down to the Chequers pub on the river at Hanham, the water below the weir is free and contains most fish.

Good luck

For future ref; Glint the river below the weir as jeff said is free right down to the Bristol docks.BUT BEWARE the tide can push the river up and over the banks down this stretch and can be very dangerous if you climb down the bank to fish at water level as i do.More free fishing can be had on the opposite bank down near what was St Annes board mills. If you find the Somerfield store at St Annes its free for a few hundred yards upstream then its St Annes club water at about £8 a season.Good for roach chub dace and bream. Also the feeder canal is good on its day> I had 30lb of quality roach on hemp and tares last summer, but it can "turn off" in an instant leaving you fishless all day.St Georges lake is free with some really huge roach to be had,I have fished it now for a couple of years and had no problems wid Yobs, although the opportunity is there.I always have a long bank stick to hand just in case as I very often fish on my own down there. If you need any more local info in the future I will gladly help if I can.

thanks for the info, I've seen a few people comment on georges park being good for roach and a bit dodgy. is it ok for parking, fishing my local river is a nightmare because of short stay pay and display or residents parking.

yea mate easy parking and a short walk to the Lake.In the summer try Hemp an tares.you only need to fish 4/5 metres out and can bring the fish in right under your feet.GOOD quality roach up around 12oz or a pound. Some large carp to play with if you got a pole that can handle them too.Sweetcorn or pellet for them although bread should be good,as the ducks are fed ton's of it everyday.Oh dont park in the car park, use the side street else you will have a long walk and I aint sure the car will be ok when you return.I fished it last Monday, but never had a bite. Its usually hit n miss in the winter, but in the summer a man with no arms could catch the roach.
