I've been using Drennan Wide Gape Match hooks for all my maggot float fishing for at least a year now and I can't recommend them highly enough. They are perhaps a smidgen too heavy a guage for out and out tiddler bashing, but when you expect, or at least hope, something better will come along, they are bob on. I particularly like them for grayling fishing in a size 16 or 18. I find threading a maggot up the shank of a 16 particularly effective. I doesn't seem to impinge on the number of bites but does give an improved hook up rate for the notoriously fickle grayling.

The Kamasan B611 is also a good hood in this respect.

DOH hook not hood.

I use kamasan B611's, but I've been thinking about trying a different pattern,
As they seem to pop maggots too often, in the barbed version. Unfortunately there's little variety locally.

Try using barbless with a live one followed by a deadun to keep it on.

Is this the same way as a castor is threaded to hide a small hook or use two on a larger hook Chris?

Not knowing how you hook a caster, I've no idea.

I would usually hook a maggot on a size 18 hook, as shown in the "hooked normally" part of the following article. I tend to find that grayling and dace on my local river will sometimes give fast unhitable bites when fishing this way. Half the maggot comes back ragged after you missed the bite. Going smaller doesn't help, you get the same problem and, if you do manage to hook fish, you've got a greater chance of them getting off, especially the twisty grayling.

Rather than going for a smaller hook, my solution is to go up to a 16 and thread the maggot, as shown in the "threaded single maggot" part of the article. I don't get fewer bites, but I do get a better hooking rate and fewer lost fish.

I use Kamasan B520's for maggot, and B560's for worm, caster, bread, and pellet

For maggot fishing I opt for the Mustad 90340 Barbless Maggot hooks.

These are the modern 90340 not to be confused with the much older original feeder hook pattern of the same number.

They have a long point and are barbless, so to me it is the perfect maggot hook as they are quite thin gauge as well, and yet strong in use.

They come is sizes from 14's to 24's and I use them on both running rigs and pole rigs, and come in bot spade end and eyed patterns.

They might take a bit of "finding" but once tried you will do as I do and buy up a good supply for future use.

kamasan And Drennen are the same company, just different trading name.

I like the Super Specialist, and the wide Gape.

I also like the wide gap by Drennan and the same brand for the Silverfish Maggot in 18 and 20....

Whilst on the subject of small hooks, suggestions / recommendations for :

Tares ?

Hemp ?

Caster ?

( in self tie spades )

Apologies to the OP (again!)

thanks

I use the wide cape for those also, apart from Hemp.

I don't use hemp on the hook, I use fake Hemp on the hook

Peter Jacobs.....As you say not easy to find !

Just to be sure; Is ' Mustad 90340 Barbless Maggot Hook ' the actual name of this hook ??

I would like to check the wire gauge just to see if they can be used for other baits such as those I mention in a post (or they just a 'maggot' hook in your opinion ? )

I just need 'fine wire' and possibly less than 0,43 which seems to be the norm ? That's a question !!

Useful post though........................................

I can recommend the Drennan SS micro barbed 16s used with 4lb line and a mahseer knot but I quite like the sound of the others mentioned.

Thanks Tee-Cee, nice to have your aquantance to :), I've fairly recently returned to fishing after many years absence and although I feel like I'm playing catch up for the most part I'm completely loving it and the people I have met (and on the forums).

Tubertini series 2 is my choice for all the above baits. Long shank round bend .... And much stronger than you might think. Doesn't blunt when hooking hemp through the shell either!

To OP .... I like round bend hooks so use the series 2 for maggot as well, but the kamasan b560 is brilliant if you want a hook that helps avoid spin offs.

The original 90340 is NOT a feeder hook .... In a 22 it was the default match chub hook Of the 1980s
