No questions to basic...

1. Ledger fishing. How long should the hook line ideally be?
2. Like most at the moment not having a great deal of spare cash to throw in a swim. What are the cheapest ground baiting options?
3. Is baiting a swim really necessary to catch?

Depends on the situation. Anything from a few inches to a few feet.

2. Like most at the moment not having a great deal of spare cash to throw in a swim. What are the cheapest ground baiting options?
The cheapest bought groundbait is usually plain brown or white crumb.
The cheapest option for many individuals is to use old/stale/waste bread. Put it through the blender to give a fine crumb.

3. Is baiting a swim really necessary to catch?
Again, depends on the circumstances. However, if you only ever use a hookbait and no free offerings, you need to hope, or make sure, that you are on fish from the very start.

Steve, I feel it would help us help you if you said what your target fish were and what type of water you are fishing. There are a few on here who fish in your area...
