Arriving at the angling superstore just after 8 am I was met by Sharron Aspden the co-owner. A line of cars outside with bundles of rods, reels, and accessories headed toward us. Clearly the advertising and the social media campaign worked.

The cavalry arrived in the form of Dave Coster, our match angling supremo, and we spent the next 7 hours with a steady stream of valuations, chats and purchases.

At one point the queue was so long that Sharon sat the line of waiting customers on carp chairs, providing tea and chat until we could meet.

These events are valuable for both Thomas Turner and the tackle shops. A mix of shop regulars, newbies and Thomas Turner customers came and went all day.

Once we bought the tackle, most anglers had an issue leaving the shop, with money burning a hole in their pocket, win-win all round.

What did we buy? A good mix of coarse, game and sea tackle. A Hardy Taupo Perfect with spare spool was an unexpected find as was the unused Hardy Golden Prince 8/9 reel. Hardy rods included vintage Fred Buller Pike, Sharpes for Farlow, staggered ferrule split cane rod and a Pezon Michel Parabolic fly from the same seller. Fibreglass rods came and went all day. A Terry Eustace Big Pike rod and similar carp models were bought in.

B James Avocet was welcome, 2 Hardy Wanless spinning rods, a pair of Hardy Altex reels, one in its pear-shaped leather case and a variety of modern fly reels, incl. Vosseler of Germany large arbour models. Hardy Simplex Wading staff/ net with bamboo handle, Brady Conway wicker creel and Farlow wood frame Gye net all from the same home. Abu Ambassadeur 7,000 + 10,000 reels. 2 Penn Senator wrecking reels in 6/0 + 9/0 for shark Tuna and conger. A pair Hardy Marksman Avon Smuggler and Float coarse fishing rods, as new in tubes + a rare Greys of Alnwick The Lite-Line 13’ Match rod.

The Farlow Patent Lever brass salmon reel in leather case is very nice. Mitchells, Allcock Felton Cross wind and 2x J W Young Freedex reels. A J W Young John Wilson Heritage Centrepin reel, built in 2003, lined up, never fished, will be online shortly, looking for a new home.

Some people come along just for the valuation aspect or to chat. We freely provide information, background stories and values for tackle you wish to keep or pass on. We met Paul a wood carver who is hand making stunning walking sticks and fish trophies for the shop. A Slater reel collector popped in to show us just a few of the rare examples he has amassed over 30 years. Dave likes big reels (see main picture).

Sharron and Craig are on top of their game running a well-oiled ship. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a massive inventory are key factors in their success. Craig of course only catches huge fish
😊
.

We thank them for their hospitality and look forward to the on-going partnership.

Dave C left with even more new rigs and hooks. I couldn’t resist a barbel cushion destined for my man cave.

Have look at the in-shop video we made (click here).

We are booked to return to the Horncastle Angling Superstore in August for another valuation day and a special event. Contact us if you have tackle to sell or wish to have valued, coarse sea or game, antique, vintage or modern.

For the tackle shop owners; this will be of interest to you!

Inviting Thomas Turner to your store costs you nothing. It provides a new attraction and increases footfall, especially welcome in these difficult trading times.

Contact John on john@thomasturner.com or call 07548 871985 to discuss the opportunity.
