Went out yesterday from 2-8.30pm.

I fished 15 swims, with meat and pellet and only had a couple of indications of a fish...nothing more.

Simon came down and we chatted for a bit, which really broke up the monotony.

I would usually come home from a session like that feeling a bit disappointed but, strangley, I felt quite satisfied and hopeful for the next one:confused:

Must say I didn't fancy your chances yesterday Neil. That bitter East wind, very low levels and the clarity of the river didn't bode well...

Just got back from a mini trip down to Somerset where on the way down the Bristol Frome was added to my collection of Fromes. Some nice trout, dace and roach from a river that trickles through a gorge as if like the Teme with the tap turned off.

Next day I drew a couple of blanks regarding not fishing as at the first river the fish were in a spot that was too close to overhead electric cables to risk, the second river was a tease as after spotting at least a couple hundred decent chub and nice roach I concluded that the banks were just to high to land fish safely without me going in. Thoughts of my extra long landing net handle sitting at home in NW London did not lighten the mood as I headed off to my next river.

Whilst more of a drain the Land Yeo was much more accessible and the people walking it's banks were very friendly all saying hello and one lady even greeting me with "I hope you catch a very big fish" and although I didn't I did manage some large skimmers and rather nice rudd plus yet another Yeo for the books, and there was me thinking there were lots of Fromes!. On the way back to my luxury accommodation at Putins - sorry Pontins I even managed a few hours on a free stretch of the Brue where quite a few roach and small chub were caught in a short time. It was a long day where four rivers were visited and two fished no wonder I felt knackered driving home today.

I went out for a couple of hours today.

Firstly I fished a mill stream and caught a new pb Perch of 2lb 4oz, swiftly followed by a jack on the next cast.

Then I tried the River Chess where a tiny perch fell to the same lure.

Moving on to the Colne I swapped for Simons lure, thinking it would be good for a Chub... another jack hit the net.

Very enjoyable! :)

Tough afternoon on the river today. The extra water, that made last week productive, has now run off leaving a low river with a nasty, peaty stain. Ended up scratching around for four grayling, three dace, a small trout and too many minnows.

I popped over to the farm shop today for a couple of sacks of spuds so killed two birds with one stone, I had an hour or two on the river also. The river had little flow and looked dirty but I did ok, I had some chubletts and dace, some barbel and a little fingerling barbel...

I had an enjoyable very mixed bag today. There was a cold easterly and plenty of horizontal rain but I managed 3 perch biggest 2lb 13ozs, one eel 1lb 14ozs,
a small chub of a pound or so and two carp to 5 or 6 lb whilst catching small stuff to use as deadbait.
Interestingly this stillwater breeds chub. There is a pipe that is two feet off the water which discharges springwater and it provides enough flow for a successful spawning. The larger adult chub stocked years ago have long since died out.

After last weeks debacle went out for an hour before the light went last night. Warm day lot of insects activity , March Browns everywhere , Dragonflies , small moths. Wasn't that enthusiastic but cast a craigs nightime around without much luck. No fish rising.
Another fly fisherman had a chat with me and said he had the same experience of fish smashing up fry under the rowing platforms / jettys. His friend had pulled out 6 pound brown trout from right by a rowing platform. I am beginning to think that casting is overrated , a worm /fly dangled over the edge of these platforms might the go.
Spent the last 10 minutes watching a moth that had been trapped in the surface film thrash around , surely no self respecting trout could resist that ? well they must be cleaning up the dead insects during the night as nothing went near it.
Beautiful sunset ...one of these days i will remember to take a photo ...

Are the brown trout native or were they introduced?
Also perhaps if the water was warm the trout being a cold water species were down somewhere in the deepest water they could find?

Trotting today saw 45+ fish from about 5 swims.

Bleak, Minnow, Dace, Chub, Roach, Perch & Gudgeon, smelly jeans:p

Downstream was the producer...upstream the pace of the float was the angling equivalent of watching paint dry.

Out spinning on the reservoir today for a few hours - the osprey is still there providing the only highlight of the trip - had 3 takes but the pike let go of the spinnerbait even faster than they took it - a real puzzle as they seem to by fixated on fry & fry alone, exploding out of the water regularly like humpback whales do when they have herded up the prey fish. Head scratching time & give it another go on Saturday

A cracking day fishing for stillwater roach. Successfully avoided the carp and knocked out plenty of decent roach. The average size was a fairly impressive (at least to me) 8-10oz. Unfortunately, as I know they go bigger, the best was a slightly frustrating 14oz. Plenty of 12/13oz fish to back that up though and I doubt I had a single fish less than 6oz. I'd guesstimate a total bag of well over 20lb. The only interlopers in the roachfest were a few small chub and a surprise tench of about 3lb. When it set off I was praying it was a roach, though I didn't need to see it to know it wasn't.

A top day on the river again today in the company of my carer, namely Crow.

Bit of a chilly start with a brisk easterly building up throughout the day but we enjoyed at least some shelter from it for the most part, the river like many at the moment was crystal clear again and very low.

Crow was after the barbel and I had set up a float paternoster rig for a perch or zander with an additional stick float set up to run right off the rod tip in some deep water with the aim of catching a few lives but even this seemed hard going under the circumstances.

Despite the conditions Crow did very well banking some very fit barbel of a level 10lb followed by another nice fish around 8lb and I had not had much interest on the livebait rig which in turn sent me off a short distance upriver to catch a few fresh ones from a more suitable peg before returning with three hard won chublets.

Out went the livebait rig again, barely any further than ten feet away from where I was still trotting and occasionally holding back right under the rod tip and then I had a very positive bite which saw the 6 x no.4 stick disappearing into the clear depths which was initially met upon the strike with mediocre resistance until the fish realised it was hooked and then went on a very powerful run out into the river and despite the barbel like noises coming from the drag I could feel some very angry head shaking which dared me to believe it might be a big perch, after first considering a chub.

It shouldn’t really have been a big deal on a 3.6lb hooklink but there was little I could do with it and eventually I managed to regain control and slip the net under a very nice perch, along with Crow’s line and feeder which it had run straight across.

A couple of pictures, a rest in the net again and on to the scales and after a deduction afterwards for the net we settled at 3lb 2oz… Cracking!

An hour or so later and a moment of high drama as I hit another fish right under the rod tip and this took off similar to the first but felt as though it dwarfed it in size, both Crow and myself agreeing that the angry jagging through the rod action was definitely not a barbel and by the time it had reached mid-river the rocky bottom contour had taken its toll on the hooklink which parted just above the hook.

I’m convinced it was a huge perch and the fish I’ve been looking for on and off for over two years but that’s fishing, there will be another day and I have another trick up my sleeve for next time but for now I was happy with the 3+…

And a slight dash of irony in that I had a small livebait swimming around barely ten feet away all day and these perch were more interested in the steady trickle of reds with just a single maggot on a size eighteen hook!

Cheers Crow, until next time… :w

Another excellent day out courtesy of binka, river was very low and clear and with the east wind that had been blowing for a couple of days prospects didn't look good, just to show how wrong I was 2 Barbel were netted one around 8lbs the other 10lbs dead (weighed the same when it was alive :D) heres the 10

Highlight of the day was the superb Perch caught by binka, a privilege to see such a fish, blackest moment of the day was the loss of what was probably a very large Perch, the fight was very un Barbel like and from the rod "jagging" we both agreed that the most likely customer was a Perch.

Thanks for the day Steve.

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Cracking day for the Chuckle Brothers again ! I've now finalised my retirements plan which is to move North armed with a large holdall of forceps, buy a stockman's hat then hunt down and befriend Brother Binka. I need waters like this but I'm stuck in the Colne Valley which is full of carp and not a lot else and corralled by the M25 which adds half a day to all journies.

My day was somewhat less rewarding. The meeting from hell in Wembley....I was glad to simply get out alive !

By way of celebration I may open my zander campaign tomorrow. Mrs S and the 25 permitting !
