I wanted to give Glens Triac floats an airing today and with the usual river a bit too high for trotting I thought the ideal place to use the float was a outlet of a lake not too far away. The outlet was up a few inches and quite coloured but it was fishable. From the start I had dace and chub, some nice sized dace and chub varying from about 6 ounces up to about 3lb.
I took a picture of the first two dace I caught next to one of Glenns floats, a float that was sitting just right shotted with 3bbs. It was only towards the end of my session that I thought I'd take another pic and so I kept the next few fish i caught in the net head, lucky I did because when I was winding one of them in, which turned out to be my last fish a pike had latched onto the poor sod. I only had several trotts through after that and had no takers so it was obvious the gatecrasher had decided to hang out in the swim. Not to worry i'd had enough anyhow :).

You may be able to see the chub that esox wanted for it's tea amongst the others in the net, it had quite a large deep slice in it's sides!

11 codgers fished our weekly match today at Red lion bridge GUC Marsworth. With moored boats on the opposite bank I decided to gamble, instead of my usual punch over the near shelf bagging roach, I set up a 2swan waggler on my SuperG match rod with a 20 Drennan red maggot hook size 20 to 0:12. I started by feeding casters via catty across to the boat, I believe casters make a clattering sound as they hit the water, thus attracting fish.
Double maggot on the hook I cast tight to the boats hull, float set, dithered then slowly disappeared and I was into my first fish, a small perch.
2 fresh maggots went across again and I refed with a pouch of casters, float dived under purposely and my lift was met with angry resistance, the clutch on my TDX 3012 did it's job as the fish lunged under the boat, it was going towards the propeller so I had to be firm.
After a spirited fight a chub around 4lb was in the net.
A few minutes later I recast and almost immediately the casters I catapulted across hit the water the float buried once more, yet again solid resistance and chub no2 was in the net, this one a bit bigger.
Feeding casters every chuck I had a run of small perch and roach before I connected with another lump, it bolted under the boat and came off. Damn it! I muttered.
I felt I'd now blown it, a bumped lump would, I imagined, see off all the other fish in the vicinity.
I put the rod down and pinged small pouches of casters over regularly for a few minutes before rebaiting with 2 fresh maggots. I cast it across and the bait was snaffled on the drop, I reacted promptly and found myself attached once again to an angry lump.
Safely landed after a spirited fight chub no 3 was in the net, a broad shouldered, big headed fish in excess of 5lb.
After that and with 2 hours to go things went dead across so I rerigged with a light roach rig and fished the near shelf with pinkie catching some small roach.
At the scales I weighed in 15lb:7oz which clinched victory for me.
Runner up had 11lb:1 and 3rd 11lb dead.
Everyone caught and had a good days fishing, a total of 85lb of fish were banked by 11 codgers...

Stuck on the chuffin M25 somewhere between Heathro
Hospital appt tomorrow and almost certainly back on the meds so I felt obliged to get out today before I am poleaxed by the side effects.

Me and the BF intended to try Bury Hill for a zander but the Met Office put the kibosh on that. Sun and 23 degrees is not good zander weather though the day turned out neither as bright nor as warm as the MO said. Maybe we should have given it a go but an "off" day at BH is desperately boring. Anyway....we didnt go. The BF decided to have another go at the Thames roach whereas I barrelled off to a club "runs" water to try for a decent carp.

The lake was very busy and full of leaf. I couldnt get a spot anywhere near the area I wanted and I was seriously thinking of going home when a bloke strolled up and said him and his mate were packing up if I wanted to fish their swim. Its a decent spot so I thanked him and took him up on his offer.

Something not quite right today. I had fish in front of me cos I could see them bow waving off the bait [ they do that there] and tail patterns but I couldnt get a proper run. Eventually the RH margin rod roared off....14-8 common. I was still convinced the LH rod in open water was the one but it was the RH rod that went off again...I lost that fish bullying it which was stupid as it was a good one. Went a bit quiet then and the leaves became a real pain but I managed to winkle two more fish out in the hour after dark......11-8 and a scraper 15 pounder. Missed a scorching run too which shouldnt be possible the way I'm fishing so I may have to have a bit of a rethink there. I also felt they were a bit wary of the bait....maybe I need to show them something different.

Got home feeling a bit disappointed but tbh I should have had 4 fish and that's fairly good for a short session there though the average size was a bit down.

Took my best and most comfortable chair so I'm not too stiff tonight either....a lot better than I would have been had I spent the afternoon sat on a seatbox trotting for roach with Grumpy.

For some reason known only to Himself above, I have quite severe discomfort following my four session this morning - only four hours because I packed up while I was still able. I followed my routine of exercises, medication and carrying out all tasks at low speed prior to leaving home at 06.30 this morning, so why today's effort should end so badly is beyond me....

Anyway, following my recent moderate success with chickpeas (and more expected today) I ended up totally disappointed as I didn't have a single touch on the damned bait in the two plus hours I spent flogging it. I tried everything to induce a bite and in the end I would've been quite happy to have had one and missed it! Nothing of the day suggested any major difference in conditions compared to Saturday (apart from the rain that fell on Sunday) so I can only deduce this was the reason we had a roach no show on this bait......

Fortunately, i had the ever reliable (!) hemp and tares to fall back on and a mixture of the two produce eleven fish to roughly 12ozs but even these really took a great deal of effort to winkle out. In a swim some 6' deep I took fish 6" off bottom, others 18" below the surface and , I might add, at various depths in between. Ten minutes without a touch, a quick change of depth up or down and another fish straight away. NOT several fish as one might anticipate, but just the odd one..
Punched bread also a complete waste of time....

Tonight, when I should be looking forward to two further days of fishing, I am left contemplating two days with walking the main attraction to help loosen the joints, so it looks like Friday before I venture out again.

Overall a good day though, and still nice to be out in solitude..............

Tigger, dont you get tempted to try and catch a pike when it wanders into your swim? If you catch it, it will ****** off and leave your fish alone too. Win, win.

I went to coombe country park today for a bit of piking, I planned on livebaiting but got carried away with lures. Got one, missed 3. It amazed me how many anglers there didnt have a clue.. But there was one dude there who had bagged a few fish and put me onto a good spot. Wish I took his number but it slipped my mind in all the excitement.

A couple of duckies. New beach on Monday for a couple of hours with sand-eels, came across an article using them as bait, cut the tails and heads off and thread them on the hook but not a sausage, not even the pin whiting. Competition locally at the weekend and load of Dover Soles caught, the biggest 1lb 6oz, unusual this time of year so, with some left over sand-eels that were going off a bit gave them a go yesterday and not a sausage' I am always in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong bait it seems.
Better tides next week and definitely some lug-worms. Might try a bit of coarse fishing in the meantime, everyone seems to be doing well so see if I can be an abject failure at that.
A couple of Turnstones landed right in front of me yesterday but soon flew off and I think a Sandwich Tern out at sea, might be migrating and the weather is just amazing, look at that beach, its like some tropical island, no wailing and gnashing of teeth from me over global warming for now anyway. Just reveling in it and looking at the view is enough, life is good; the fish can wait.

Out on my own yesterday, mick is not well at the moment, so away at seven and at the fishery by half past.
Haven’t posted on this thread for a while been mainly carp fishing this summer, done ok but nothing better than sixteen pounds, that twenty is still eluding me.

Now I’ve had a change of methods, I’ve actually bought myself a pole, it’s a drennan red range margin pole, at eight metres long, it’s ideal for the margins were I usually fish , and out to its eight metres in front, it’s nice and light, a lot better than the old Triana pole I used to have.

So on my favourite pond, sleeper rod out for carp, and then set the pole up, fished it with the top kit and two sections, leaving two sections in reserve, it’s got two top kits and and one for potting bait in, so I fed three swims lightly with two mm pellets and a bit of corn, one in left hand margin, one at ten o clock and one straight in front, plumbed on for the margin and one for the two other swims.
For bait I had maggots, worms, and corn plus some six mm expander pellets.
The maggots and worms just attracted small perch, so switched to corn, this was the first decent fish.View attachment 5778

Then I had a run of bream and skimmers best bream was four and a half pounds, it gave me a good scrap too pulled a fair bit of elastic out, and had me wondering what it was, turned out to be foul hooked in the pectoral fin, if bream always fought like that they would be more popular perhaps.
This is it.
View attachment 5779
Finished withtwenty four silvers plus two carp on the sleeper rod, eight pounds six and twelve pounds eleven ounces.

Also hooked a carp on the pole which felt ok till it decided it had enough and snapped the three pound hook length like cotton.

I’m pleased with this pole, my nephew originally bought it, and I got it at half price when he couldn’t get on with it, will be using it a lot this winter, certainly seem to catch a lot more on it.

Lots of birds about saw long tailed tits, robins, a raven, buzzard, kestrel and several lots of wild geese flying west towards the coast.
Enjoyed the day back on Thursday.

I've either caugth the pike on my float gear when a pike has taken my fish on the way in or i've set up and caught the pike purposely many times. They don't always fire off when you put them back either, they often stay and start off where they left off.
Yesterday I was ready for off anyhow and even if I hadn't been I could have moved elsewhere. I only go pike fishing when the urge comes which isn't very often.

Fished Dunham's Whiteacres again yesterday, what a difference from last Wednesday on Badger's. Arrive at 7:45am, @Another Dave's worst nightmare with mi maggots and bread :) (see post How did you get on?) No pictures I'm afraid &$%£*:#^? phone camera did it on me again. Set up fishing into the wind at the end of the pool and facing an island.

I'd lightened up, 2lb Fluorocarbon hooklength to 4lb main, 2bb antenna float with the intention of targetting the Crucians. If the Carp show up it'll either take me a long time to get them in (not many snags) or they'll snap me off, neither was the case.

I've caught plenty of Crucians there in the past, usually on flake but the bites take a long time to develop, 5 minutes or maybe more, felt like that anyway. I assumed they were pecking at the large bait until it got small enough where they'd have to take it in. Original plan was to fish a 20s hook with punch thinking it would give them less chance to peck at the bait. Once there I decided to start with 18s and drop down a size if I wasn't getting bites. Hemp and casters loose feed with a few maggots every now and then. Set the float to fish as near dead bottom as I could at the bottom of the far drop off. Feed with the far edge of the feed area in line with bottom of the drop off. Started casting onto the drop off which meant laying on a bit then twitching into the feed area half a turn at a time. The bottom dropped coming towards me so by the time the bait's in the centre of the feed area it's about 2:3" off bottom.

Started of with a handful of skimmmers and of all things a Mirror of about 4lb on the punch. The Crucians arrived and from then on it was nearly a bit a chuck although bites were still taking a long time to develop. Tried various baits through the day but something kept snatching the meat off without getting hooked so gave that up. I usually fry the meat and don't normally have a problem with robbed baits but tried without the frying this time - back to frying. Got one or two on corn but bread ruled with a Common of about 4lb later on, both Carp on a 5mm punch. I don't know whether that surprises anyone but it did me. 51 fish in all, about 80:20, Crucians to about 9oz:skimmers to maybe just over 1lb plus a handful of tiddlers and one Gudgeon.

Packed up at 3:30pm well pleased with the day.

Haven't posted in a while, not caught a lot that I can share, but now a bit of rain has occurred, the local rivers are looking slightly better. Both the Dorset Stour and Hants Avon still need a lot of rain especially as the extensive weed is now beginning to die off.

Plenty of chub have shown up from both rivers with a best of 5:13 (Stour). Some small perch and a few little pike have come to my net by way of the spinning gear I now tend to pack for all my trips at this time of year.

Most pleasing was probably the reasonable barbel that showed up while waggler fishing for roach (Avon).

Most frustrating, causing an initial much increased heart rate and anticipation, until it found the net, was this fine 4:07 roach/bream hybrid from the Stour.

Had a few hours this afternoon on the Trent at Swarkstone, with the rain from the last couple of days, the river had risen considerably and still had a good flow and colour. Caught several plump Dace and Roach and a few Perch, all on the feeder. Managed to kick over my bait box with 2 pints of maggots scattered over the ground, apart from that calamity, a nice few hours on the river.

A glorious autumn sunset ended the day.

@wetthrough Gordon, I think you got your pools mixed up at Dunham, Badger is at Lloyds Meadow, the other pools at Dunham are Copper Beech, and White Oaks,..Whiteacres is in Cornwall.:wh I couldn't make it yesterday, I finally convinced the wife to get to the doctors, she kept complaining of a clicking sound and soreness in her neck,. No it was not me trying to bump her off, It turns out she has something called cervical sponderosa, sort of arthritis, So after the doctors we ended up at High Legh Garden Centre with the intention of going to Dunham Park after there and finally pop in at Dunham Fishery to see how you were getting on, Came out of garden centre and she wanted to get home. So the day was cut short.

Stunning photos!

Quite agree! Nick praise from John (s63) on stunning photos is praise indeed! Those photos would make a great day even if you blanked and just being out in the fresh air and experiencing that is the reason why fishing not catching is so rewarding!

With an appointment this afternoon I only had the morning to fish. Taking a leaf from Rob's book, I went down to a small stream in the local town centre.

image.jpg

No matchsticks for me though, the surface of the stream was so mottled with light and shadow along with the inevitable Autumn leaves floating down, I selected a bolo float with a nice visible tip.

image.jpg

3no6 shot plus an 8 and an 11 dropper shirt button style cocked it perfectly. Plumbed up at just 2' deep in the very clear water .
Sat for a while feeding pinches of maggots into the flow down the middle before my first trot down.
It wasn't long before the first bite on single maggot, a small perch.

image.jpg

With constant feeding loose maggots I soon had a run of fish, roach, chublets, bleak and at one point a jack pike, which had been swirling and splashing in front of me, it took a small fish as I wound it in.
I had it on for at least a minute before it launched itself clear of the water and snapped my 1lb4oz hook link .

Best fish of the day was this roach.

image.jpg

I reckon I caught that same perch at least 4 times too...

Piking on the usual reservoir this morning, flat calm, two lads camping/carping further down the bank - didn't see either until about 9.30am. Out with three dead baits and nothing happened, fry started to scatter on the surface indicating the perch had woken up and there were two larger swirls indicating the pike were awake as well. Then had a run, a pike of 13lb on half a sardine fixed to a two single hook rig.Recast to the same spot and away it went again, another pike of 8lb 9oz,back to the same spot and it was away for the third time a fish of 5lb.The middle rod decided to join in with another pike of 10lb 12oz - all on half sardines on two single hook rigs. The spot that produced three pike was about 15 yards out between two weed beds in around 3 feet of water - worth getting up for.
