Grumpy? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

A couple of hours spent on the river through the city this lunchtime, went with minimal kit and had just the one bait, lobworms, which were free lined and trotted. I don’t think another way is possible at the moment, the water is so shallow and still full of streamer weed. Very satisfying though watching your worm drift downstream waiting for a large object to emerge from cover to engulf the poor creature.

The chub aren’t easy to spot at the moment as they find holes with a bit of depth but with a lot of peering through Polaroid’s some were spotted and they were only to keen to feast on the worms.

Managed to winkle out three over the two hours, the best going 4lb 6oz and only to pleased to smile for the camera whereas the captor certainly wasn’t.

Just an add on for Kev, my granddaughter produced her own double in the night 6-5 and 7-1 I have to admit they didn't go back and were kept for the future :)

I decided to have a couple of hours trotting for chub and barbel today as although it was only 12 degrees it felt ok and the wind was minimal. I'd scoped out the levels before making a move so knew the river was at a good height for my preference.
When I got to the stretch it was just how I like it, no sign of anyone else :).
The stretch above this one belongs to another of the clubs i'm in and it had about a dozen cars on the carpark, glad i'm in this smaller club also.
Anyhow when i'd made my quite short walk from the car to my chosen swim I began by wading out and then cattying out a good few pouches of maggots and casters, the mix was because there's several weeks worth of different batches mixed together lol....who cares as the fish don't seem to be put off :).
From the first trott through, my float was constantly dipping under for a moment and coming back to the surface because there seemed to be swarms of minnows patroling like bluebottles round shyte in the height of summer!
I caught lots of the little blighters but each one of them may have been a barbel so I had to strike when the float stayed submerged for more than a split second. Turned out two of those very bites where barbel so it was wise to strike at them. I noticed a lot of fish coming up from a couple of feet downstream of me to a few yards downstream. I knew straight away it was grayling sucking in my mixture of old maggots and casters spilling out of my hand when re filling the hook so I decided to have a play round and try to catch them. I moved my bulk shot and my dropper shot up flush to my float stem and squeezed a couple of old black casters on so they take in air and their insides make a seal and keep them afloat. The plan worked well and I had a number of them, each and everyone of em fought way beyond their sizes and catching them was great fun, much better than dace etc.
Before long I was dithering with cold as unlike back home where the wind was just a slight gust, here it was a stong wind and the chill it made made the temp's feel much lower than 12 degrees! I only had a t shirt on and a small sleevless body warmer which should have been fine if the wind hadn't been so strong. When my fingers went numb and my teeth began to chatter I decided enough was enough so I came home, glad I did n'all.

Still trying for the perch challenge with no great result. I tried a different water today. On livebait one at 1.5lb
and like last week I had a carp again on livebait. What is it with these carp?

Those are expensive lures! You could try introducing a split ring with a 30lb BS between hook and rig, that ought to give first when pulling for a break with your current set up.
I did dabble with that but figured its not worth losing a fish of a lifetime.. Am I being silly?
I have been making my own traces recently but I cant find strong enough clips. I tried some Gamakatsu ones but they were WAYYY weaker than advertised.

Gonna need to be one huge fish to destroy a 30lb split ring surely?

If you continue to lose high value lures you’ll stop fishing in this manner all together I would think.

Educational purposes only-in the tackle shop buying my lug-worms spotted Razor fish on the menu so I thought as the beach is covered with them must give them a try. On arrival there were only 5 in the packet and they were all squishy from frozen. Was not happy with them on the hook trying to cast distance. They just about stayed on but every time I reeled in the hooks were bare. I did notice very light trembles on the rod tip so probably crabs and I thought these wont last long which they didn't. Should have stuck with the tried and tested lug worms.
Still, very calm sea and a bit between the summer and winter species and a low clear sea probably meant I wouldn't have caught anything anyway for this time of year plus I got there late at the top of the tide going down, cant do that get up early and rush around. A woman walked up and asked me for 20p, not often you get propositioned for 20p at least a can lager usually-maybe post brexit! Then she produced a bucket and all was revealed, collecting all the plastic with her family which she did regularly. I thought this beach was unusually clean, I gave her all my change, she said she had collected £100, all for the local beach clean club but she was welcome even it was not. I later saw them load their car with three sackfuls. Lovely lady, should be more like that.
Not much wildlife but last week on walks, great white egret, stonechat and loads of curlews and oyster catchers, all very pleasant. Plus found a social club with an angling club attached with mooring facilities so going to get a boat next summer and spend it drifting up and down this stretch trolling and float fishing, its so nice I might not come home; so might disappear, beats the rat race and as my debts build up they can come and find me and wave their bits at paper at me from the beach, if they swim out I will give them a clout round the ear with an oar. Always have a plan I say.

Missed a nice pike 1st cast then went on to catch nothing and lose £20 worth of lures

Know the feeling I have lost five lures recently one reason why many of my lures are second hand off ebay.
You have to sometimes cast where the snags are and in my case a large oak tree didn't want to give me my lures back.
Have you ever tried pulling for a break on 50lb braid something as to give and the tree won.

Works really well with jigs, I probably free 90%+ of my snaged jigs. I've always presumed it worked when the ball of lead on the jig head is snagged between stones rather than the when hook point is caught in anything.

On lures with trebles the trick is to use 30lb split rings to join the lure to the hooks and then use 50lb braid, when the lure is snagged you simply bend the split rings out. There is no way on earth a pike will bend out 30lb split rings on a lure if your drag on your reel is set
