I made a tentative return to fishing over the last couple of weeks with a bit of back-to-basics barbelling - not much gear and just bait on the line.
Today I tried a bit of anything-that-swims fishing, complete with seatbox, holdalls and all the associated heavy lifting.
I believe successful sportsmen and athletes mentally prepare by visualising the match-winning shot, the record-breaking jump..... I prepared by imagining catching lots of fish. Sadly, it didn't help, but it was still a nice day.
I waited til the frost melted, then drove off to a new fishery: commercial-ish, but 40 years old and with a liberal regime. I feel undressed without a keepnet when fishing for shoal fish, and the owners understand this. It's a pretty place
First visit so I asked the only bloke fishing a few questions. I noticed he had his float set at about 5'. Good depth, I said, Like that all round? Oh yes, he replied. So I picked a peg, with an eye on the chilly wind and low sun to come. Plumbed up all around - max depth 2'. So I walked from empty peg to peg, dropping in the plummet, til |I found 4', and shifted all the gear round there.
Re-settled, I fed chopped worm out to one side, and maggots to the other. Worm fetched only tiny perch, and I was loath to keep feeding them expensive worms ( at this rate, their dinner was going to be more expensive than mine). Feeding maggots in very small amounts eventually got a few bites, but the roach were scarce and not so big
By now it was gone 3, so I was relieved when a few carp switched on and put a bend in the rod. These two were the prettiest of the half-dozen that showed up
On a better day, they wouldn't get their picture taken, but then it was freezing in the morning. A couple of bigger ones were hooked, but there were 3 islands nearby that an enterprising carp could try to get around, and there was no stopping them.
I found out that one of the lakes has some nice crucians, so I'll certainly go there again.
