Sorry about the duplicate post folks. I am still pratting about trying to get the photo orientation right. Pete.

Have a few pints of ale first before you go fishing not after, and then take the picture as your falling over, lateral thinking! always here to help:)

markg. I can't fault your logic. The only flaw is my capacity for ale far exceeds it's effect on my stability. By the time I reached the "Tipping Point" I would be Brassic and more than likely finish up taking a "selfie". But thanks for your input, I will try my level best (as opposed to your lateral best) to succeed. Pete.

Bit of time spare Thursday, so went out after the Grayling on a stretch which is conveniently situated not far from where I needed to be later.
The river is still low, so opted for the matchpro which i haven't used for a while.
Nice little session with about 20 to about a pound or so, and I'd forgotten what a delight the rod is.
Forgot phone so no pics, but may try again tomorrow, maybe lobbing flies as well,as river is ideal level for this.

K-kippy It used to happen to me so I started turning them before uploading and it worked great. Then one day the rotate option was randomly there.

For a change I fished a fixture with my other club on a snake lake near Maidenhead today. Not really my cup of tea but I was curious to see it as it’s only recently opened. It’s about quarter of a mile long with 40 odd pegs. Each peg has wire separating it from the next and it’s no wider than 13m all along. There are also dams every so often which along with the wires make it cormorant proof.

It’s also float only so I set up my pole.
Max depth was 3’. I was soon catching loads of small chub, small carp, roach, skimmers and some of these, all on maggots..

I soon tired of fishing the pole at 13m just catching small fish so I just used my topkit down in the margin, caught just as many but with less effort...
TBH I didn’t really enjoy it, I’d rather be on a river or canal anyday.

I went to my reservoir today. Fished bomb on my old Shaky Wand with prawn/worm/dead reds. I had 8 this size at 1lb 9oz give or take, plus lots of tiddlers.
Now if anyone doubts that Lincolnshire is the true Gods county at the end of the rainbow...see below :wh

Crikey Peter thats the biggest gudgeon I have ever seen:wh

Likewise! Infact I haven’t caught a single gudgeon since I returned to fishing four years ago, they were a pest when I was a kid fishing.

Today I went spinning for pike along the Grove Ferry section of the Great Stour, walked three miles stopping every few metres and casting out hoping for a hefty bump on the retrieve but it wasn’t to be.

Speaking with a few old codgers silver fishing along the stretch it was evident that the pike are noticeably absent, whether that’s due to predation from seals and otters isn’t clear but the most likely reason.

7.30 this morning I was walking the banks of the Stour to a peg where last Thursday I had a stack of roach and dace. OK so the temperature was 1 degree C and there had been three nights of hard frost since then but with a 8ft deep peg and the river sock on, I had no doubt I would get a result. Two hours later, I had only one dace and that taken on the retrieve, so no credit to me. I had stick floated it in what were seemingly perfect conditions for nowt, even tried the bomb rod to see if they wanted it nailed to the deck but never a bite and when you consider the number of struts (minnows) in the Stour, that beggers belief. I began wonder if I had actually learnt anything in 65 years of river fishing. Then the light of realization dawned, of course I had, there was only one thing to do in a situation like this, knock it on the head and go to the Pub. Walking back to the car I thought I could salvage something from the session by taking some photos of pegs, with the phone sideways on, as advised in the image uploading thread, and see if I could get this photos thing cracked. So this is what I did:

This is the peg I "fished" (went through the motions)

These are two other pegs I have earmarked for the future

Driving back, I convinced myself that for the time being I am all "Stoured out" and will turn my attention to the Frome, as of this coming Thursday. It matters little how much you think you know, in the end the River's the Gaffer. I did get a belated result though, the photo upload thing worked a treat. Pete

Wasn’t sure wether to fish or not today, it was freezing hard last night, so I decided to see what it’s like in the morning, car windows had a coating of ice, but it’s a frost pocket where I live, so I thought it would be ok where I go, as it was forecast to be eight degrees later.

Turned out I was right no frost at the fishery, so I picked a swim I fish often, could have had any swim as I was the only one there all day, I’m still getting to grips with this margin pole I bought so I thought I’d have a day just using that, plumbed one top kit with the strongest elastic in the margin, and the other out in front, at about five metres.

Potted a few two mm pellets, corn, and a few eight mm pellets, in both swims, not much as it was cold, didn’t want to over feed, first put in with corn a skimmer, and then slowly added a few more plus a roach about six ounces.

Kept catching skimmers and the odd roach, started feeding two mm pellets with a pole pot slowly building the swim and in the afternoon the bream moved in.

Kept catching bream till about three pm and then a couple of carp started feeding in the margin swim, so swapped to the heavier kit and had a go for them, foul hooked one in minutes which came off, and had to wait while they showed up again, next one took the bait properly and gave me a good scrap, at least it stayed out in clear water, not diving into the reeds like the ones last week did, I was surprised how far the elastic can stretch, it’s 12 to 14 hollow, eventually got it to the top using the top kits side puller, and netted it first time, so my first decent carp on the pole.
It weighed ten pounds ten ounces,a nice mirror, together with twenty five silvers I had a good day, a lot better than I expected.View attachment 5879

I made a tentative return to fishing over the last couple of weeks with a bit of back-to-basics barbelling - not much gear and just bait on the line.

Today I tried a bit of anything-that-swims fishing, complete with seatbox, holdalls and all the associated heavy lifting.

I believe successful sportsmen and athletes mentally prepare by visualising the match-winning shot, the record-breaking jump..... I prepared by imagining catching lots of fish. Sadly, it didn't help, but it was still a nice day.

I waited til the frost melted, then drove off to a new fishery: commercial-ish, but 40 years old and with a liberal regime. I feel undressed without a keepnet when fishing for shoal fish, and the owners understand this. It's a pretty place

First visit so I asked the only bloke fishing a few questions. I noticed he had his float set at about 5'. Good depth, I said, Like that all round? Oh yes, he replied. So I picked a peg, with an eye on the chilly wind and low sun to come. Plumbed up all around - max depth 2'. So I walked from empty peg to peg, dropping in the plummet, til |I found 4', and shifted all the gear round there.

Re-settled, I fed chopped worm out to one side, and maggots to the other. Worm fetched only tiny perch, and I was loath to keep feeding them expensive worms ( at this rate, their dinner was going to be more expensive than mine). Feeding maggots in very small amounts eventually got a few bites, but the roach were scarce and not so big

will2.jpg

By now it was gone 3, so I was relieved when a few carp switched on and put a bend in the rod. These two were the prettiest of the half-dozen that showed up

On a better day, they wouldn't get their picture taken, but then it was freezing in the morning. A couple of bigger ones were hooked, but there were 3 islands nearby that an enterprising carp could try to get around, and there was no stopping them.

I found out that one of the lakes has some nice crucians, so I'll certainly go there again.

Out piking again this morning. After scraping the frost off the car windows the dashboard informed me it was 0C outside - not too bad.Easy journey, pulled up on the dam to speak to a mate who had been there about 10 mins or so - it was -4.5C.Took the soft option in the corner where the overflow is,sheltered from most winds. Not much moving so out with three deadbait rods, water crystal clear and mist rolling across the water from the north.Eventually the rising sun won that battle and it was a pleasure to be out and about.Joined by another mate who got the only run of the day - a pike of 10lb exactly with cormorant injuries to its head. There were about 30 of the bloody things until some hardy folks turned up in single, double sculls and even another with a crew of eight + cox.

Another blankety blank on the Lower Trent for zander. I fished till 7 now its darker earlier. Nice sunny day though until sunset.

There were a few rattles and tweeks on the line but no runs. I wonder about crayfish playing games? I have never had one out on the Trent but I presume they must be in there. Can anyone tell me for sure please.

After a very poor result Tuesday at the old codgers match at Tring I thought I’d give my local canal a go today. It was mild and windless but raining when I started.

Set up was 4m whip, 0:25g float to a 20b511. Had mostly small roach on punch with a few Chublets and gudgeon. On 2 occasions a big perch followed hooked fish in, at one point I thought I’d got it on as a small fish was engulfed on the way in, unfortunately it turned out to be a pikelet which fell off anyway.

Peter Crabtree, I do enjoy reading your reports. Canal fishing is so under rated, proper fishing. Very often I recognise your venues, I used to fish them sometimes. I moved away and now regularly fish the K&A canal and nearby river.
