What and who did you get them, float or ledger?

Dave had his chub on a simple straight lead and a couple of disks of bread wrapped round a #10. He also had some other good chub and plenty of quality dace on the float with double maggot.

Everything else fell to float fished bread or maggot under a waggler, balsa or stick depending on our individual preferences.

I managed to sneak off for an hour this morning with my LRF rod and a few lures." Just off for a walk" It was a very pleasant change from lugging tons of gear. I must do more of it. I had some tiny perch almost as big as the lure plus one at 1lb 8oz which to date is my biggest on this light lure stuff. Photo not good as it was on a phone.

Bit of a disaster today, after first cast the reel broke and I had to hand line 40 yids of line in, I was just thinking better to happen now rather than a big fish on and there was a small whiting on the hook which made me smile to myself; bu**er all else to smile about!. Shame really because I had to pack up and I have read there are some bigger whiting around now and the bloody weather brightened later with the wind dying down, angling sods were not with me today, whats new!
Force 6 or 7 blowing in my face so my one cast was cut down to about 40 yds but that's not always a bad thing, I am sure food gets washed along the shingle in a rough sea and fish come up close to the shore especially flatfish and my one whiting, although not proving the point; was probably looking for this food close in. Fancied the chance of a rare codling or bass in this sea as well.
No reel to fish with now, I have 3 broken ones, have to get on with a bit of repair or buy another one.View attachment 5961

After a short visit with the lure rod and being blown away by the autumn landscape a day or two ago I returned to the estate with rod and line and a pint of maggots and some hemp in the hope of catching some decent roach.

It was a roach a cast but all very small about the 3 to 4 oz mark, I tried tares hoping to find a better stamp of fish but didn’t get a bite.

It wasn’t the landscape that blew me away , the wind started squalling with strong gusts , rain imminent, time to scarper.

A highlight and a first for me was watching a perch follow in and engulf one of the small roach I was about to swing to hand, seen pike do it but never a stripey, love to have got a shot of the event.

The lake closes on December 1st til April 19, maybe another trip livebaiting?

I was out yesterday and today for morning spells at a still water after roach. On both occasions it was a case of chasing fish rather than just dropping a float under the rod tip and waiting for results. On Thursday I had eight roach in the first hour before going dead and despite my best efforts it took another 3 hours to almost double that figure.
Today was a little better with upwards of twenty fish spread over the morning.

By far the most productive method was spraying a few red maggots two rod lengths out and then casting a 3' on-the-drop setup over the top. The maggots were fished 'handlebar'fashion on a 20 hook with No 8 shot spaced down the line for a fairly slow drop. Some fish took as soon as the bait hit the water, others after a short wait. Had I hooked all that took the float under I would've caught a net full, but the intermittent gusty breeze and leaves made sure I worked hard for every fish!

Nothing of any great size with the best at 10" or so, but all fought well once hooked and I lost a couple which decide to come to the surface on the strike.

Great fun fishing, and the best part? I had just finished packing the gear into the car (today) when the heavens opened with some torrential rain for a while. Within ten minutes water was rushing across the A4 just outside Reading....

ps Many thanks to my good wife who, in massaging my lower back last night, helped me get to the bank today.....Now, I wonder if I could make a habit of it.............................Nah, best not to push my luck!

After several piking trips resulting in blanks, time for something different this morning - the river Wreake. Arriving as it was getting light enough to check where the cattle might be, off across the fields to a deep pool. Still deep enough even though the level was low and running very clear.Rigged a quivertip rod with liqudiised bread in the feeder and crust on the hook. After a few casts it became clear a good flush through was needed to thin out the blanket weed which seemed to carpet everything.
It turned out the chub were swirling on the top picking off floating debris, threw out chunks of crust and watched and they started taking them. How to cast crust in a gusty wind blowing right to left ? Eventually made up a longer hook length and with a big piece of crust and I suppose it was a zig rig and it worked.Had a brilliant drop back and ended up with a chub of 4lb 7oz in the net but it had two wounds from cormorants.Turned out to be the only bite so sat back and watched the passing flocks of fieldfares, rooks, crows and long tailed tits.

Enjoyed Neil’s video too, but I always do! Lovely to see the whole family getting involved.

PS. Another of my favourite video bloggers is Paul Bosworth The “River Piker” , Paul has just released two videos from his trip to Sweden, they are stunning.
