How did you get on?

I had two very quick sessions this week. Tuesday & Wednesday on a local pit just before dark.
One day freezing cold, the next raining (best time to avoid the marauding masses)
Ended up with 4 jacks in total, best around 85cm.
Really nice to be able to get out!

First time fishing since Boxing Day, took advantage of the very mild weather and joined a mate on the GUC near Berkhamsted.
Very patchy for most of the day with small roach, gudgeon and perch taking the pinkies.

About 3am I contemplated packing up but with the fading light fish started topping. Changed to a light pole rig attached to my line and put in some chopped worm via dropper just over the near shelf. Half a small red worm on a 16 dropped in over the feed. Wasn’t long before the float buried and a good fish started taking line.

Some better roach also turned up attracted by the choppy.

Finally got to my lake in the tea estate with my son. It gave me a chance to try out a set of carp rods I have had built by the Tackle Box of Dartford for the first time. It’s a set of three with three different patterns of thread work on them, so not your typical carp all matching gear. They have a somewhat retro look as I had butt buttons put on them. They were built on the ballista blank and have a test curve of 3.25lbs.

I did hook a couple of Catlas (Catla catla) which were like two peas in a pod at exactly 7.5 kg each (16.5 lbs). These fish are hard fighters but the rods handled them beautifully; the buttons and extended fore grip making them extremely comfortable to handle while really bending into the fish.

My son floatfished during the day and landed a fine mrigal (Cirhinnus mrigala) amongst others.

Happy New Year to you. They are Daiwa Emcasts in the 5000 size. But these are ones I already have and use with other rods. Haven’t bought new reels yet for these. But will certainly be doing so now.

Hi Whitty

My family and I are in good health thank you. The virus has not been as virulent here. The total number of infections recorded are 530,890 to date and the total deaths are 7,981. This is a country of 160 million people packed together like sardines. Even with some under reporting there has been no spike in the overall death rate. Vaccinations with the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine starts on February 1st. Will hopefully get fully started on the fishing soon.

Had about 3hrs of not catching in the mostly iced over local club lake, the only interest in my bait was this Robin....

The snow started to really come down causing me to give up around 3pm, apart from this cheeky Robin, a group of Fieldfare flew over, a few Magpies, and a Wren kept making an appearance.

Even on a bad day I find having a robin around cheers me up. Kingfishers do the same, cormorants not soo much, lol.

Nice bright day on part of the lake that has melted. A bit soggy an d muddy however. Its good to get a run . I had one pike, not big at 9lb but very welcome. Ledgered popped up roach.
I also had a couple of quick starts to the nerves with the bobbins shooting to the butt but with nothing to show. It was only later I realised it was a carp tormenting me with line bites.
