Graham, I agree with your comment about a brass thread, except that at ?2.35 I would EXPECT it to have one.

MMmmm, me too. I like the look of the Fox one, but it doesn't allow a sideways strike.

Johns a nice guy. Phoned him a couple years back over the availabilty of some products and we talked for a while. I use his rod rests and find them very good even without the brass thread. A nice guy like that can have my money any day. Better than some out there thats for sure.

You're not going to get a brass thread for that sort of money, look at it logically, one moulding, one operation = cheap.
Factor in a brass thread and a plastic moulding which have to be attached to each other and the cost rockets.
It's also completely unnecessary, I've had some of JRs similar products for quite a while, they certainly don't owe me anything.

Not necessarily John. The Fox one, about the same price, has a stainless thread, which according to pundits, is more expensive than brass.
I too have some John Roberts back rest rod grippy things, some luminous too. They're ok, but I would like to keep unscrewing them.
I would have thought that the total cost of materials for a plastic and brass rod rest would be in the region of - - - - - - - 20 - 30p max

Not really talking about the cost of the brass Jeff, just the extra operations involved in production.
Country of origin will make a big difference too.
I've had some in the past that were brass threaded with plastic/nylon/rubber tops and didn't like them, they always developed some movement between the two materials after a while.
I leave mine attached to the banksticks so screwing/ unscrewing is not a problem.
