About to buy a fly rod and reel, but just can't get my head round how to tie the fly line and backing etc. Just gonna buy the reel pre-loaded. Take it this will last a while before I need to actually have to do it myself i.e losing line due to snagging?

There will be videos on You Tube. I used to do it with splicing and superglue. Leaders the same. You can buy tapered leaders.

Most half-decent fly lines now come with welded loops at either end or are supplied with braided loops and sleeves. To explain the whole process would be exhausting so get on YouTube where there are instructional videos on every aspect under the sun.
