I'm after a reel to pair with a new Garbolino Power Float rod I've picked up. Will be using it to trot for big Chub and Barbel. Would like a 4000 size as will be using heavier mainlines but want something light enough to balance the rod.

Was thinking of a Shimano Aero Ci4 4000 but haven't bought a fixed spool match reel in quite some time. Think I read on here that the TDR reels are good for trotting as the spool is closer to the rod, this would help as I have dainty little baby hands :)

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

If you meant the Shimano Stradic C14 4000ra then that's a very good choice . My favourite reel by far. I'm not aware of an Aero C14 reel. The Stradic is the best fs reel I own.

Good luck finding an ARC Aero Ci4, they were discontinued a couple of years back. They tend to cost a small fortune second hand.

Of the currently available Shimano reels, I'd suggest you might look at the Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 4000RA. The oversized spool is of similar dimensions to the (recently) discontinued Aero models.

If you go down the Daiwa route, look out for the models made from "Zaion" or the LT (Light and Tough) models. I have two recent 2500 Daiwa reels. one has a metal body, the other Zaion. The Zaion bodied reel is just over 60g (nearly 2oz) lighter.

Don't get too hung up on the reach to the spool red herring. Most folks that complain about it haven't used a new Shimano reel in quite some time. A while ago, I did some measuring and found that the Daiwa reels that they were touting as having a shorter reach actually had a longer reach than the recent Shimano reels I had to hand.

I have the daiwa tdr reels in 2508A and 3012A and they would be ideal for float fishing static or trotting.
The 3012A is more than big enough, I didn't get a 4000 size as imo that reel is on the large side for float fishing and more suited to legering.

I have the shimano stradic 2500FJ reels also, again ideal for still or running float fishing.

Both of those reels are front drag and because of that they are more compact and so a better choice for trotting....jmo of course.

I would say the Daiwa reels would need a fair bit of backing on them for the line.
Have a look at the Preston Innovations and new Korum reels as well.
